Orkut has launched a new feature called Orkut Promote. It has been developed to help brands and marketers use the viral potential that Orkut provides with its numbers to their advertisement’s advantage. Google had recently announced an exclusive focus on Orkut monetization in India and Brazil (their biggest and perhaps the only markets left).

We caught up with Kalyan Manyam the Founder and CEO of Indyarocks the social network about his strategy, USP of Indyarocks and monetization possibilities for social networking.

Facebook leads the pack here not in only in terms of number of users active but also with regards to the number of hours spent on the site. The total number of minutes spent on Facebook surged 700 percent year-on-year to 13.9 bn in April this year from 1.7 bn.

Yahoo had announced last year that it was shutting the service down. Now they have announced it again that they are shutting down the service in July. So essentially they ran the site for another year after it was supposed to close down and then announced they are closing it again. Maybe the guys at Yahoo themselves missed the first announcement.

A very interesting fact pointed out by Mr Kalyan Manyam of Indyarocks during the SiliconIndia Digital Media Conference which was moderated by Rajiv Dingra was how tones of apps on a social network actually degrade user experience by making things too complicated.

The threshold in question was kept at 30% of all Facebook users. So basically if 30% of Facebook’s 200 million users voted, then the change would be implemented. The documents were then introduced on April 1th for people to vote and the poll continued till April 23rd.
