After a few weeks of heavy advertising and promotions, Aircel finally set its shop in Mumbai. Along with vodafone, Airtel, Idea, Loop, Reliance and Tata, Aircel is now the seventh service provider in the spectrum. On the launch, Gurdeep Singh, COO, Aircel, said, “The opportunity for a seventh player to come from behind is to not be a one-sided heavily loaded but to provide a composite bouquet so one is deep understanding of consumer, segmenting them very well and putting a 360 degree around the product and the proposition offered to them.”
There have been quite a bit of anticipation regarding this month’s Startup Saturday, organized by HeadStart, in Mumbai. In addition to 2 startup demos by the founders of Librarywala and AdoRoi, there was also a panel discussion scheduled, with speakers like Mahesh Murthy (from SeedFund), Hemir Doshi (from IDG Ventures), Rohit Nalwade (Ex-CEO of ConsumerVision) and Gopal Krishnan (of Mobile2Win fame). The topic of the panel discussion was – What should a startup do in a slowdown?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought forward a plan, which, if implemented, would allow anyone to use WiFi on their compatible laptops or mobile phones. This initiative by the BMC is a public-private partnership of sorts, in which the BMC plans to cover the entire city with WiFi coverage, albeit not free.
The Centre For Railway Information System (CRIS), the information technology arm of the Indian Railways, is working on mobile ticketing for Mumbai’s 65 lakh daily suburban commuters. CRIS has already begun field trials for the system and will be ready with the system by March 2009.

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International have jointly published the I-Cube Internet In India Report 2007. The IAMAI and IMRB have jointly researched the report through a survey in more than 65000 households across India. The cities covered are namely:
Mumbai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Pune, Ahmedabad, Patna, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Surat, Guwahati, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Durg, Bhopal, Bhubhaneshwar, Trichy, Jalgaon, Panipat, Trisshur, and Bellary.
