Number Portability : TRAI Recommends by June 2009

We have already discussed the frustrations that lead to the demands for Number Portability. TRAI is pretty serious about Mobile Number Portability (MNP), it seems. In its latest recommendations TRAI has suggested - favoring the MNP implementation by June 2009 – licensing of Mobile Number Portability Clearing House Administrator (MCHA) through a competitive bidding process.

Number Portability allows one to retain one’s number while switching the operators. So, if your Reliance Mobile customer care is a waste, the billing is erroneous (to put it politely) and there are just no Nokia N-Series handsets available, you can happily switch over to a Vodafone network, while still retaining your three year old number, just in case you ex decides to call you sometime.

Mobile Portability - Coming Soon To India

The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has finally announced that ‘number portability’ would soon be introduced in India initially in the top four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The much awaited service will be available from the fourth quarter of 2008.
