Years ago, when the hype about Optical Cables was on a high and everyone was laying thousands of kilometers of optical fiber cables (OFCs) across the length and breadth of the country, Railways decided to do the same, but on a much bigger scale. So, Railways OFC network, spread across some 38,000 kilometers was the biggest Optical Fiber Cable network in the country. I remember reading an exclusive story in BusinessWorld about the same at that time. The Hindu reports that Railways will soon be installing VSAT connectivity. VSAT, which stands for very Small Aperture Terminal is a technology that builds a connection with the satellite. The Centre For Railway Information System (CRIS), the information technology arm of the Indian Railways, is working on mobile ticketing for Mumbai’s 65 lakh daily suburban commuters. CRIS has already begun field trials for the system and will be ready with the system by March 2009.
