The drama around the 3G rollout in the country hardly seems to be over. However, the pre-bid conference has been deferred till August 27 and the opening of bids has been deferred to September 22 from September 3 as decided earlier.

Idea Cellular, one of the major telecom companies in India led by the Aditya Birla group have announced that they have begun their operations on Mumbai. The company so far has heavy presence in the Northern and Southen parts of the country.

We have 3 different, each with its own set of views and claims about the issue. RCOM claims that as per the license issued to it, it is allowed to offer both GSM and CDMA services in the country. Although TRAI is mum on RCOM’s claim, it maintains that the COAI is required to provide inter-link, failing which would be against the licensing agreements they agreed upon. COAI on the other hand claims that re-negotiations should take place since RCOM’s GSM services require a new network and hence should be considered a new service.

The August event of Mobile Monday Mumbai was held yesterday to discuss the consultation paper released by The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on mobile value added services (VAS) recently. WATBlog was at the event to see what the esteemed panelists had to say about TRAI’s recommendation on regulating and licensing mobile value added services and other services to be provided via 3G and Next Generation Network (NGN).

iPhone 3G - This is undoubtedly the only gadget, ever released by any company in the market, that has managed to generate so much hype that users all over the world are desperately awaiting the launch of the phone in their respective countries.

So, amidst all the speculations in the market, how much is the iPhone actually worth?

Amidst all the speculations regarding the launch date of the brand new iPhone 3G in India, since the very first day Vodafone came out with initial registrations, Economic Times finally comes up with the official launch date of the “super-phone” as August 22, 2008. It seems, it is going to be Airtel to pioneer the much touted touch-phone’s launch in India, giving mobile companies like NOKIA, Samsung and Motorola something to think about.

It seems that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecom (DoT) are all pumped up with their workings, so much so, that all the activity in the telecom market just refuses to die down. Barely a week after DoT released the guidelines for the auction of 3G spectrum in India, allowing even international players to participate, TRAI has now released guideline recommendations for allowing Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in the Indian Telecom Market.

In the wake of recent terror blasts all over the country and given the amount of security measures taken up by Delhi, it wasn’t surprising to know that the Delhi police are planning to upgrade their e-surveillance system at vulnerable locations in the city, by putting in place a digitized CCTV monitoring system.

If you remember, WATBlog had come up with a few pointers for the Indian Government on how to effectively eye on every single online activity being carried out, on this soil, and also to track them down directly to the person responsible. It looks like the authorities are dead serious in their efforts to curb cyber terrorism, the way they deem fit. The police have already started moving in quite a few cities in the country. As Times of India reports, the cyber café owners in Amritsar have already started to issue identity cards to their users.

The 3G scenario in India seems to be heating up big time. First, it was RCom trying to push the envelope for an early 3G rollout for the CDMA technology, which later got shelved because of the GSM market. Then came the announcements from Vodafone and Airtel to launch Apple’s iPhone 3G very soon. Not even a month after that, Airtel started promoting the launch of HTC Touch Diamond (touted as the iPhone killer) on televisions and print all over the country.

The mobile technology is advancing by leaps and bounds. A host of new features are being introduced into your average mobile phones. A simple mobile with a color screen, which was not possible for less that Rs. 10,000 is now made available for a mere Rs. 3000. Other features too have seen plethora of improvements in the recent years. One can find that manufacturers are trying to add more and more ‘computer’-istic features to a mobile phone.
