Google’s Android ecosystem has been getting a lot of flak since malicious apps were discovered in the Android Market last year. Google had to remotely swipe off these entire app from every user’s phone. Besides the fact that kind of access into my personal phone is a little creepy, this ‘remote swiping’ did not actually offer a solution since Google would find out about these apps only after they had infected user’s phone. Now, Google has announced that they may have finally have the solution to this problem it’s called the ‘Bouncer’. The Bouncer is a server side application which scours the apps that have been submitted to the Market to find out about any malicious activity. This service will not only check for new applications but will also scan pre-existing apps. “Device activations grew 250% year-on-year, and the total number of app downloads from Android Market topped 11 billion,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of engineering, posted on the Google Mobile Blog. “As the platform continues to grow, we’re focused on bringing you the best new features and innovations — including in security.”

“Here’s how it works: once an application is uploaded, the service immediately starts analyzing it for known malware, spyware and trojans. It also looks for behaviors that indicate an application might be misbehaving, and compares it against previously analyzed apps to detect possible red flags. We also analyze new developer accounts to help prevent malicious and repeat-offending developers from coming back.”

Google is basically simulating all the new and old apps on its Cloud infrastructure and seeing if the app is malicious or does anything out of the ordinary. Google is best known for automating things and processes. They have always placed a heavy emphasis on machine learning and this is quite evident in their search engine. Android also features something called as ‘sandboxing’ which does not allow one instance of a running app to interact with other other apps or components on your phone. This same technology is present in their Chrome OS.

Here’s a excerpt from the blog which talks about Android’s security features:

In addition to using new services to help prevent malware, we designed Android from the beginning to make mobile malware less disruptive. In the PC model, malware has more potential to misuse your information. We learned from this approach, designing Android for Internet-connected devices. Some of Android’s core security features are:

Sandboxing: The Android platform uses a technique called “sandboxing” to put virtual walls between applications and other software on the device. So, if you download a malicious application, it can’t access data on other parts of your phone and its potential harm is drastically limited.

Permissions: Android provides a permission system to help you understand the capabilities of the apps you install, and manage your own preferences. That way, if you see a game unnecessarily requests permission to send SMS, for example, you don’t need to install it.

Malware removal: Android is designed to prevent malware from modifying the platform or hiding from you, so it can be easily removed if your device is affected. Android Market also has the capability of remotely removing malware from your phone or tablet, if required.

No security approach is foolproof, and added scrutiny can often lead to important improvements. Our systems are getting better at detecting and eliminating malware every day, and we continue to invite the community to work with us to keep Android safe.

Android, as a mobile operating system was considered less safe when compared to Apple’s stringent process of App approval. With Bouncer, Google seems to have killed that fear. This has been hailed by many as a welcome move for Android and the community of users especially with the Android usage and app consumption rising high in India. Let us see how hackers and malicious coders get around this new security measure.

Tell us why in the comments box.

Facebook feels that Orkut is still a worthy adversary for it in India. One of the largest, Facebook’s IPO filling keeps revealing many interesting tidbits. We recently wrote about how Facebook actually accepted it had rivals. But considering Orkut to be one of them is, well, amusing in the least.

Sure it was a huge rage when Google introduced it. We remember filling in so many fun trivia & quizzes. However, since Facebook reared in India, people have literally forgotten Orkut. While Facebook may consider it a rival lets evaluate; Why? Facebook has named others along with Orkut, such as Cyworld in Korea, Mixi in Japan, vKontakte in Russia & of course Orkut in India as well as Brazil. These are being referred to as Social Networks with Deep Regional Roots.

Nonetheless, together they have sizable population of active & passive users attached to them. This has directly affected Facebook’s march in these regions. In their absence Facebook would have garnered considerably more users per month.

Facebook grew 132% over last year in terms of Monthly Active Users (MAU) in India, while in Brazil it was a whopping 268%. Despite this the Filling relegates us to “relatively less-penetrated, large markets such as Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, and South Korea” In case of Japan & Korea, the filing reveals penetration of only 15% & censorship-riddled China has near 0%!

Orkut, once a vibrant network has been relegated to the Back-burner, both by users & by Google. Though it’s own have abandoned it, Facebook is still watching it cautiously.

Do you still use or prefer Orkut?

Matrimonial heavy-hitter BharatMatrimony has filed a complaint against Google with the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Accusing Google of discriminatory trade practices related to its AdWords program, BharaMatrimony feels Google is playing unfair with its Adwords. BharatMatrimony, in its complaint has said, Google’s Adwords relating to its websites are being sold to rival parties such as Shaadi.com, and Jeevansaathi.com.

The increasing number of “Competition Law” complaints against Google globally may suggest a pattern of Anti-Competitive conduct. In India, the protectors of law may argue that this needs to be checked in order to protect Indian businesses and consumers.

However, we keep forgetting that Google is a profit making organization. Its money comes from Advertising. In light of these facts, why shouldn’t Google resort to such measures that ensure its revenue increases? While Google has sort of become a de facto when its comes to searching for anything online, it may choose to follow certain regulations. However, selling Adwords to rival companies for more amount of money is by no means an “unfair” practice.

While BharatMatrimony has come out openly challenging this behavior of Google, we believe the investigation should be focused on whether Google sold off something that rightfully belonged to BharatMatrimony in the first place.

Whose side are you on?

Redbus.in now goes mobile. Backed by Pilani SOft Labs, Redbus.in now is available to its fan-base on mobile as well.

This mobile ticketing service was bouncing in its beta service in 2011. But given the fact Redbus had innumerable bus ticket bookings through credit/debit cards, COD as well as net-banking, it is now time for them to be omnipresent. To this the CEO of Redbus.in, Phanindra Sama says, “Mobile shows signs of becoming a dominant channel and we want to enable bus travellers to be able to plan and book their tickets easily on the device. We have created a very easy-to-use and intuitive mobile site with all available payment options.“

The mobile site is not only intriguing but also helps users to book tickets, browse bus schedules, choose seat layouts, fares and also make payments using credit/debit cards, COD or net banking. It did bring out the mobile version at a time when the mobile internet users in India are growing constantly. The craze of smartphones has already engulfed the nation. Now the web is moving to mobile as a next step to a smart future-scope.

Startups in India are making a mark and this is visible from the humongous investments flowing into the web based product domain. Last year Redbus.in raised $6.5 million from Helion Venture Partners, Inventus Capital Partners and Seedfund in its series-C funding. This had started long back in 2008 and 2009 when they started raising funds to bolster their growth and set an example of how simple services can be baked into a product mold.

In today’s scenario of job-hopping, the average urban employee is always on the lookout for that higher paying job. Also, with more and more college graduates pouring out of the system each year, job sites like Naukri.com have an evergreen demand. People use Naukri’s vast database of job openings to find the perfect job for them.

Now, Naukri.com has recognized that a vast number of internet connected Indians are connecting to the web via their smartphones. They have launched Smarthphone Apps for various major platforms, namely Android, iOS and Blackberry devices.

Says Vibhore Sharma from Naukri.com, “Mobile devices are bringing about a revolution in the way people use Internet and consume content from the web. Smartphones are the new basic phones that will eventually engage users more than a PC. With the launch of our apps and the repurposed website for mobile devices, we aim to offer our users the ability to continue their job search on the go and never miss out on a career opportunity.” In the year 2010, Naukri had introduced premium job section on their website where total traffic gathered by the website was 10%. Recently, competitor Monster.com initiated into India’s campus placement market as Monster College which is aimed at seamlessly connecting colleges, students and companies.

As any job hunter knows, timing it crucial. One does not want to miss an opportunity just because they were away from a PC. Keeping that in mind, the new Naukri.com smartphone app ensures you never miss anything. There is even a provision for Job Alerts. One can filter job openings by location, keywords, functional area, experience bracket, and minimum expected salary. Up-to five job alerts can be set up. These alerts will also be sent to the user’s inbox thrice a week.

Facebook is ready to make history with the biggest ever IPO in American history. Interestingly, while filing the paperwork with the SEC, Facebook acknowledged some other tech heavyweights as its competitors. And who are these competitors? Google, Microsoft and Twitter. Nothing surprising. Facebook clearly has an advantage over these other companies in terms of social networking.

While filing with SEC, Facebook released the following statement:“We face significant competition in almost every aspect of our business, including from companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Twitter, which offer a variety of Internet products, services, content, and online advertising offerings, as well as from mobile companies and smaller Internet companies that offer products and services that may compete with specific Facebook features.”

As expected, Facebook singled out Google as it main competitor.
“We compete broadly with Google’s social networking offerings, including Google+, which it has integrated with certain products, including search and Android”.

It also said that some its rivals have significantly better resources and dominating positions in certain markets when compared to Facebook. They are obviously talking about Google here.

“Certain competitors, including Google, could use strong or dominant positions in one or more markets to gain competitive advantage against us in areas where we operate including: by integrating competing social networking platforms or features into products they control such as search engines, web browsers, or mobile device operating systems; by making acquisitions; or by making access to Facebook more difficult. As a result, our competitors may acquire and engage users at the expense of the growth or engagement of our user base, which may negatively affect our business and financial results.”

Facebook is also monitoring start-ups and upcoming social networks that happen to provide the same offerings as Facebook. This includes Social start-ups like Path and Pinterest. Facebook is also looking at local social networks in countries like India, China, Japan and Korea.

How Microsoft would be listed as a competitor is still not clear. Facebook faces competition from traditional media and online media businesses in terms of Ad-serving platforms and Ad budgets. Well, that is a lot of competition but then Facebook is that huge a company. We are waiting anxiously for this IPO to unfold. We will keep you updated.

Two year old Disruptive Technology Products startup eDreams Edusoft will receive Rs. 5 Crores (US$ 1 Million) from Mumbai Angels.

eDreams team has conjured up a patent pending Education tool titled ‘FunToot’ which is an Artificial Intelligence enhanced software that has the ability to observe, assess, diagnose, interact, encourage and help. Hence it is scalable & applicable to children with different levels of intelligence & characteristics.

So, what was Edusoft Winning ‘Pitch’ all about?

“Rajeev’s business model was very innovative and he is leveraging on a social need- that of shortage of teachers, where there is a need to actually reinforce learning and making it fun.” revealed Harsh Mariwala, CMD of Marico Ltd who judged the final round.

The funding appears to be a winning incentive in the Show ‘The Pitch’- Season 2. This is a business reality show aired on BloombergUTV, meant to encourage upcoming entrepreneurship. The participants are judged on their “business acumen, ability to be a team player, innovative thinking, sense of fair play and mental strength”. At the end of each episode one of the contestants is eliminated.

Our readers might recall the pattern is much like Super Angles which feature Venture Capital Firms simply called “Angle Investors” & airs on ET Now. Coincidentally fashion & lifestyle portal Fetise.com secured a much higher investment of 25 Crores through it! While there are many innovative education channels out there, eDreams adds another dimension of Intelligence to it which senses the child’s potential & helps him or her to learn at one’s pace. This higher degree of interaction will surely benefit a lot of children & their parents who feel education has become a rote medium.

Would you choose this medium of learning for your kids?

Idea Subscribers will soon get a customized version of Opera Mini. Country’s third largest Mobile Service company has signed a deal with Opera Software to offer customized or “Co-Branded” Opera Mini mobile web-browser to its subscribers.

What’s in it for the Subscribers?

Opera Mini is an ultra-light web-browser packed with features that even the built-in browsers lack. Supported with “data-tunneling” through Opera’s proprietary technology; Opera Turbo, users get a much smoother & better mobile internet experience while spending a lot less on data.

Recently, Vodafone had signed a similar deal with Opera. With Opera’s cross-platform UI framework, operators can deploy a “consistent experience, look, and feel across their product offerings” What this means is the look and feel of Opera is customizable to the Service providers image & brand. Hence, if you have Opera with Splash of “Red” for Vodafone Users, you may have a Opera with Yellow hues for Idea Customers. However, we have yet to see any actual benefit for the end consumer.

Operators like Idea, Vodafone are encouraging mass awareness about Mobile Internet which is just getting to stand on its feet. Opera Mini is a perfect tool for all Mobile phones as “it brings full Internet to all devices, regardless of device constraints and platform” says Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software.

Opera Mini may be an “Ideal enabler”, however, service providers have to get their act straight if they wish to offer quality services.

WATSummit 2012 was a resounding success. The panels were teeming with insights and managed to open every one’s eyes to burgeoning Digital Industry in India. We got some very good response from everyone involved. ET Now also covered the summit on its show ‘Starting up’, especially the ‘Startup vs. VC Perspective’ panel which was the last panel at the summit.

The panel was moderated by Sudhir Syal, anchor of ‘Starting Up’. The panel comprised of Sasha Mirchandani from Kae Capital, Rahul Khanna from Canaan India and Alok Kejriwal from Games2Win. The concept of a Digital Startup has begun taking root in India. The panel comprised of VCs as well as Alok who is a founder and it was the perfect opportunity for everyone to explore the VC vs. Startup perspective in India.

Some key insights and brilliant analyses were shared by the panelists. Alok questioned the ‘metrics of success’ for a startup and asked VCs and entrepreneurs to pay the utmost attention to deciding what exactly success means to a fledgling company. Sasha spoke at length about how the current e-commerce scenario might affect startups and their relationship with VCs. He predicted that some companies may end up as winners before the year is out because these next generation e-commerce start-ups were already raising the bar high in terms of funding and opportunities.

Rahul pointed out that the companies to watch out for this year were the ones who were looking and working on the next avatar of services for sectors such as Jobs and Travel. He also stressed that ‘Social’ was increasingly becoming the medium for a lot of startups in India.

All in all, a very stimulating discussion! So what are your thoughts? Share them with us.

India Post has decided to unveil its new mobile money order service with a pan-India launch.

Some months ago the news was out as India Post tied up with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Linited (BSNL) to start the plan on the mobile money order service. BSNLwill be acting only as the technological partner and its not mandatory for users to be a user of BSNL.

The plan ensures that there will selected post offices with mobile phones equipped with the application. Once the sender comes to these post offices to deposit money, they will need to give provider’s details. This in return they will get a 16 digit transfer code on his or her mobile and can then send the recipient with a SMS.

Right now the services are available in two states- Bihar and Punjab given the fact that the number of immigrant workers are many. This information was revealed by Manjula Prasher, secretary (Posts), chairman of the postal services Board and director general of India Post while the National Postal Policy 2012 round-table was going on.

The humble mobile phone, which started out as an instrument to simply make and receive phone calls, has evolved into so much more. Its use cases have been so extensive that it is impossible for anyone to have predicted it. Mobile phones have already made redundant the calculator, the music player, the GPS Navigation System and have changed the way people work. With the boom of smartphones and mobile applications, cell phones may soon replace another person: the travel agent.

In the words of Scott Durchslag, president, Expedia Worldwide, Travel is intrinsically a mobile experience. Hence mobile phones and hotel and travel bookings go together like bread and butter. This is why consumers are using their cell phones to make hotel reservations and alter travel plans at an increased rate each year.

A number of International Hotel chains have recognized the need and supplied Mobile Apps and Mobile Websites. In December last year, Marriott International launched free Android and iOS Apps, giving customers access to 3,900 hotels across 13 brands in 71 countries, 16 hotels of these being in India. The app enable travellers to find nearby hotels, make or cancel bookings, check-in, join Marriott’s customer reward programme and find out what’s happening in the local area. The Marriott smartphone apps and website attract 31 lakh visitors from across the world annually.

One such user is Srimanth Raghav, a Pune-based financial investor who uses the iPhone Marriott app extensively. “It’s convenient to have an app that enables bookings at the last minute. As a business traveller, most of my visits are decided at the spur of the moment and cannot be planned in advance.” says Srimath.

Other chains like ITC Hotels and the InterContinental Hotels Group too have their own dedicated smartphone apps. These apps are a boon for regular travellers who require instant confirmation and portability. For younger travellers, who may be on a budget, there exist a slew of travel-deal websites like Kayak and TripAdvisor, which provide special deals and travel cum hotel packages via there online portals. We can picture only growth in the future of Mobile Travel Bookings in India with the increasing penetration of internet enabled mobile devices.

What do you think? Will Mobile Bookings soon become a mainstream alternative to the travel agent or will people stick to their old ways? Do let us know in the comments below.

Online retail giant Amazon has finally entered Indian online retail space with Junglee.com powered by Jeff Bezos founded $48 Billion strong company. According to Amazon – ”Junglee enables customers to find and discover products from online and offline retailers in India and from Amazon.com.” Website claims that customers can find over 1.2 crore products and 14,000 brands.

With the exponential growth of the online commerce in the nation pegged at $10 billion in 2011 it is no surprise that the world’s largest online retailer selling books to electronics finally marked it’s entry to India as it was rumored for some time.

India is already third largest Internet market after USA and China and to add to that Indian internet users have taken a new liking for the e-commerce resulting into hosts of new e-commerce portals.

It is also being mentioned that Amazon will set up a facility in Hyderabad and employ over 3,000 people. It will be interesting to see how retail giant will chart a success path in the country as Indian buyers display a very different buying behavior as opposed to American buyers who are the stronghold of Amazon.

It is IPO time in Techland once again. Facebook, the world’s biggest social networking service is finally going to file its IPO soon. This IPO has been discussed to no end since the rumors came out some 2-3 months ago. The facts are finally here. The company has planned to file a $5 billion initial public offering.

This happened yesterday when the company handed over the necessary paperwork to regulators. It has selected financial majors Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan to manage the huge IPO. Morgan Stanley will be in a pivotal role in the management of this IPO.

Let us put that IPO sum in perspective. Google filed an IPO worth $1.4 billion in 2004. Groupon raised$750 million and got a valuation of $13 billion dollars which was half of the expected valuation. Zynga performed miserably in its IPO filing in this December but still managed to raise $1 billion and get a valuation of $7 billion which was way lesser than the expected $20 billion. Here, you see a trend where all these IPO’s are seemingly steep in expectations and that too when the economy is in a bad place. Investor trust in Tech companies is not very strong these days and this effects the valuation of most major Tech companies.

But will Facebook be different? It all depends. Considering the IPO history of the previously mentioned companies, Facebook might not reach $100 billion mark so easily. But then again, it just might consider how everyone seems to go gaga over it. The $5 billion amount is just a preliminary target and this will increase depending on investor demand in the coming months. Nonetheless, this marks the biggest ever US market debut in history and this is a company started by a college kid in his dorm-room. Let us see where this goes..

What are your thoughts on Facebook’s IPO? Do let us know.

Cyber terrorists are deriving sadistic pleasure out of the fact that most of the Facebook users are grimacing about the new timeline feature. The timeline did not gain much appreciation from the Facebook country people since it reveals personal log of a person in details right from the date he or she has been online. Many users have expressed their dislike for this as many do not wish to share their details with all and sundry. Facebook’s timeline will soon be made mandatory and will enable anyone to go through Facebook profiles by date. The cyber security vendor ESET exclaimed, “A lot of people will decide that they don’t like Timeline and start looking for ways to revert to their old profiles. Scam artists and ‘clickjackers’ are getting ready for that day, offering bogus links on Facebook that promise Timeline removal.”

It is a feast time for the cyber rogues who will rush into this scenario where users are unhappy with timeline. So these miscreants are trying to attract people with false “Like” buttons, inviting them to see Youtube videos, asking to invite friends and more. This will only lead to an extension with a malware containment zone.

If the Cyber pirates have let out to harm the web security, there must have been some warning from Facebook with regard to deactivating Timeline to evade this issue. Stephen Cobb, security evangelist for ESET expressed his anguish by saying, “Unless Facebook changes its mind and makes Timeline optional, the bottom line is that you will have to live with it and avoid the temptation to click on links promising to help you deactivate, remove, or disable Timeline.”

However on another note the Facebook timeline is kind of a way of shaking users who have not been careful in the past of their activity on the web. Yes now this will push people to maintain a clean chit and share only what they want to. This will keep a check on whom users are sharing with and what. So the timeline is what Garaham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos says, “The Timeline was the catalyst to reassess my relationship with Facebook. After all, a website that holds details of your entire life, likes and loves, is gold dust for scammers.”

It is time that we all realize how we want others to picture our profile.

India’s Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued Show Cause Notices to India’s five private operators, including Bharti Airtel , Vodafone and Reliance Communications, for under reporting revenues.

As per a special audit report conducted for the period between 2006 to 2008, gross discrepancies about the actual revenue generated & the one reported, were found. This was allegedly done in order to pay much lower license fees. This has resulted in a loss of over Rs. 1600 Crores (US$ 330 Million) that is now being sought from the TelCos. Communications Minister Mr. Sibal confirmed the same yesterday & his department has put forth a condition to deposit about 1000 Crores immediately & only after that the companies will get to meet the Minister face-to-face to explain their side of the story. Though this feels kind of a dictatorial attitude, the news, if true will have serious bearing for the Telcos who are already reeling under the pressure of the 2G Scam & 3G fiasco.

How does the Under-Reporting work?

Telecom Companies have multiple Licenses depending on the service they provide. Unified Access Service License (UASL), National Long Distance (NLD), International Long Distance (ILD) and Internet Service Provider (ISP). Now, the UASL (basic and mobile) telephony has a license fee in the range of 6 – 10 per cent whereas NLD, ILD, ISP and Internet Protocol has only 6%. Guess, Govt. wants to promote Internet Penetration & this serves as an incentive for the companies. However, all the accused service providers were showing more revenue in segment that carried lower license fee. This operators’ scope to arbitrage of shifting revenue from higher license fee to the lower side has caused a huge los to the exchequer claims DoT.

Surprisingly, this complaint was reported way back in 2009. Is our government waking up too soon?

Apple iPad dominated the buzz about tablets on social media in India, according to a survey conducted by NMIncite, a Nielsen McKinsey company. iPad managed to garner more share in online conversations ahead of Android tablets, reports Times Of India.

iPad had 55% buzz online, while Android tablets managed to capture 40% share. The survey tracked all online mediums from India for second half of the year 2011. Samsung Galaxy Tab was the highest buzz-getter in Android tablets, while Motorola Xoom, Reliance Tab and ultra-cost Aakash also featured on the list.

“Even though Apple has not made a big push to promote and sell the iPad in India, it has already generated tremendous buzz online,” said Farshad Family, managing director, Nielsen Media- India.

The survey also studied the category of smartphones. Android was the clear leader in this category. Android-based smartphones managed to garner 41% buzz, compared to iPhone’s 27% and BlackBerry’s 14%. But, this was actually lower than its 45% share for the first half of 2011.

According to analytics’ firm Canalys, Apple overtook Hewlett Packard as the largest vendor of personal computers in the world in the fourth quarter of 2011. This was riding on the back of the upbeat performance shown by iPad. Apple sold 15.43 million tablets in this quarter which was almost double of corresponding quarter from last year.

CNBC TV-18 recently awarded e-commerce portal Yebhi.com the prestigious Hottest Internet Company.

So, What is Yebhi.com’s winning formula?

Yebhi.com a lifestyle online shopping portal (franchisee of Bigshoebazaar India Pvt.ltd) founded in 2009 with funding of Rs. 40 Crores. It is one-stop shop for all lifestyle products like Mobiles, Bags, Apparel, Accessories etc.

Daily deals sites have been coming up with speed. To keep up & excel in the race is no small feat. While some choose to go exclusive, Yebhi.com has tried to offer everything under the “Lifestyle” category. Further maintaining a healthy foot-fall is back-breaking work too. However, there are reassuring statics too with Indians readily flocking to the virtual stores. Hence Yebhi.com should focus on what it has been doing.

The awards are an yearly affair, which honor the “spirit of entrepreneurship and celebrate the new age heroes who are transforming India and taking India to the World”. The awards are meant to encourage young & talented entrepreneurs that have “defied the global meltdown and created billion dollar enterprises through their entrepreneurship skills.” says Ms. Shereen Bhan, Executive Editor, CNBC-TV18 & Series Editor, Young Turks.

The Unique Identification Project, which started with much fanfare, has been taking a lot of flake lately. Hence, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has decided to conduct a thorough review of the process to identify & eliminate the flaws.

The collection of biometric identifiers of over 60 Crores Indians, had begun quite well. However, with such a huge target spread over a vast area put many roadblocks in the way. Problems such as equipment failure, people mismanagement, inadequate resources, illiteracy etc. posed many challenges. However, the most serious of them all is the “Security Concern” stated Home Minister P Chidambaram. Hence, the message that UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani has decided, that the project needs scrutiny of all procedures & processes to weed out possibilities of duplication or identity theft. How exactly is Identity theft possible when biometrics are involved was not made clear.

So what are these “Security Concerns”?

At present there are multiple agencies involved in collecting the Biometric information. Thereafter it is collated & after verification of the documents, a UID card is generated & handed-over. For the purpose of identity verification, the agencies were instructed to accept “Introduction Letters”. The flaw? Such letters were being handed out for money!

The matter doesn’t end there. Since the Govt. has opted for an outsourced model, Multiple agencies are literally clamoring to increase their biometrics “Capture” Count. We guess, they must be paid on the number of People scanned per day. This has further escalated the duplication issue.

Have our readers enrolled for the UID?

We wrote earlier how Twitter censoring some tweets based on requests by Governments is detrimental to social communication as a medium. This caused an outrage on the social network and Tweeps protested this announcement with #TwitterBlackout. Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo has argued that Twitter is still transparent and the current policies are for the good for the communications platform.

Costolo argued that Twitter’s new policy is in fact helping freedom of speech. He said that earlier if a Government demanded that Twitter remove a tweet or block a user, they had to comply. Now with the new policies the content will be censored but only in the country that has demanded it. Twitter will try its best that they do not go ahead with this but if the demands are rigid then they will only censor the content in that country. This is actually a very good thing. If you tweet something considered to be against the law, your tweet will still be visible to the world even though it may be blocked in your own country. This may actually give rise to better journalism and reporting. Behind the closed walls of a country, we could still get a glimpse of the situation or breaking news in that country.

“There’s been no change in our stance or attitude or policy with respect to content on Twitter,” Costolo said. “What we announced is a greater capability we now have. Now, when we are issued a valid legal order in a country in which we operate, such as a DMCA takedown notice, we are able to leave the content up for as many people around the world as possible, while still operating within the local law. You can’t operate in these countries and choose the laws you want to abide by.”

In my previous blog post, I was very harsh on this new policy because Censorship of any kind is absolutely intolerable, but considering the various nuances of this policy has made me believe that this may indeed be one of the best loop-holes discovered to aid Freedom of Speech. There however remains the aspect of people in the blocked country not being able to view any content. Well, Proxy Servers and anonymous routers might be able to do the trick for them.

What do you think about Twitter’s new policy? Do let us know.

While our country is currently fixated on FM channels, there is definitely a digital revolution in the works in Bangalore. Digital Radio startup, Venturenet Partners Pvt. Ltd. has managed to get Series A funding from Ojas Ventures for their yet to be launched Digital Radio service, Radiowalla.

Venturenet is a young one year old startup which already has one service, called Spot Radio under its belt. Venturenet launched Spot Radio last year in August, 2011 and it has been moving upwards ever since. Right now they have managed to partner with around 20 national retail chains with over 2000 sites in the country. They are expected to be present in 10,000 sites before this year ends. Radiowalla is their direct to consumer approach which will initially offer Internet audio channels for normal netizens. They are expected to launch this in April. The funding amount is as of now, undisclosed.

Venturenet was founded by Anil Srivatsa and Harvinderjit Bhatia. Previously, Anil was the CEO of Kings XI Punjab and COO of Radio Today Broadcasting (Meow 104.8 FM) among other companies.

Ojas Ventures is an Indian VC firm that is focused on early stage funding of Indian technology and Digital Startups. Pavan Krishnamurthy and Raghu Batta from Ojas Ventures will be joining the board of the fledgling startup to steer it in the right direction. They both said in a joint statement, “In Radiowalla founders we saw a set of passionate and experienced entrepreneurs taking an innovative approach to building music based business that addresses a large and growing market opportunity. We’re confident that our operating experience together with working closely with founders will help in creating a valuable company.”

Looking at their website one gets the feeling that they will emulating the Pandora experience for India. Their ‘mood’ based offerings seem somewhat analogous to Pandora’s Music Genome Project. Pandora is not available in India and Radiowalla might just bridge the gap. There is also the slight problem of adoption as broadband speeds are not that good all over India for streaming music and content. If more and more people adopt 3G and if there is better Internet infrastructure in the country in general, the service will succeed nicely. Until then they face some very strong challenges in terms of adoption.

What is your take on Indian Digital Radio channels and services? Do let us know in the comments.
