Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS continued to dominate the worldwide mobile OS market in the first quarter on 2013, as per the latest report from IDC. The report suggests that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has grabbed third place from BlackBerry in global smartphone shipments in the first quarter. Android and iOS combined for an overwhelming 92.3 percent of all smartphone shipments during the period, the research firm said. IDC’s figures show that Android devices accounted for 75 percent of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013 with 162.1 million devices shipped while Apple’s 17.3 percent amounted to 37.4 million devices.

Giving some insights about iOS the report touted that iPhone demand still “remains strong worldwide” despite the fact that iOS hasn’t undergone any radical changes since debuting in 2007. This may not be the case soon as Apple is expected to introduce iOS7 at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference next month.

Meanwhile, IDC revealed that Microsoft’s Windows Phone posted the largest gain among all operating systems, a feat largely due to Nokia. The Finnish phone maker was responsible for 70 percent of all Windows Phone shipments last quarter. Since partnering with Microsoft, Nokia has shipped a total of 20.3 million Windows Phone handsets. Overall Windows Phone sold 7 million units in the first quarter of 2013 for 3.2 percent market share.

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerryslipped from third to fourth place with its share dropped to 2.9 percent from 6.4 percent a year ago. Although the company saw double-digit declines in the quarter from a year ago, it introduced and shipped more than a million units running on its new BB10 platform. The company hopes its new hardware and software will catapult sales in the months ahead.

Rounding out the top five was the open-source Linux platform, which saw continued decline in shipment. It held on to 1% market share (down from 2.1%). Finally, Symbian saw the biggest decline in market share, down to just 0.6%.

A recent Gartner report revealed that Samsung continued to reign the smartphone market beating Nokia and Apple with 23.6 percent of overall market. I believe the Korean smartphone maker will continue to lead with the launch of Galaxy S4 and range of mid range devices.

Worldwide mobile phone sales figures have increased slightly to .7 percent to a figure of almost 425.8 million figures, all thanks to rapid growth in the Asia Pacific region, mainly comprising of countries like India and China who are witnessing high levels of growth and industrialization. Mobile phone sales stood at 422.9 million units in the January-March 2012 quarter, according to Gartner in its research study.

The study also revealed data and statistics of market share of mobile pone manufacturers as per worldwide sales. According to Gartner’s report, Samsung has close to 23.6 per cent overall market share with sales of around 100.65 million units followed by Nokia at 14.8 per cent share (63.21 million units) and Apple at nine per cent (38.33 million units).Other mobile phone manufacturers such as LG Electronics, ZTE and Sony too commanded respectable overall mobile phone sales in the world market.

LG Electronics stood fourth (15.61 million units), while ZTE ranked fifth (14.60 million units) and Sony eighth (7.95 million units) in the list.

“More than 226 million mobile phones were sold to end users in Asia-Pacific in the first quarter of 2013, which helped the region increase its share of global mobile phones to 53.1 per cent year-on-year,” Gartner Principal Research Analyst Anshul Gupta said.

Gartner’s report shed light on the declining growth in Europe, Middle East and Africa(the EMEA region) by claiming that mobile phone sales reduced by 3.6 percent, while the sales in North America and Latin America’s markets fell 9.5 per cent and 3.8 per cent, respectively. Similarly, Japan too witnessed a decline in its mobile phone sales by around 7.3 percent in the given period January-March 2012 quarter. These figures represent a significant drop in sales figures in the particular regions, though this doesn’t seem to have affected the worldwide mobile phone sales at a greater level.

According to statements in Gartner’s report, the number of smartphones sold throughout the globe were 210 million units in the first quarter of 2013, up 42.9 per cent from the first quarter of 2012. This is rather important as according to Gartner’s collected data, almost half of all mobile phone sales came from sales of smartphones by various manufacturers. The report also came out with separate sales units for specific manufacturers in the smartphones category. As far as smartphones were concerned, Samsung led the pack yet again. Samsung’s share in the smartphones category touched 30.8 per cent with 64.74 million units, followed by Apple (18.2 per cent) and LG (4.8 per cent) in Q1 2013.

In the first quarter of 2013, smartphones accounted for 49.3 per cent of sales of mobile phones worldwide. The point to be noted is that this is a drastic rise from the 34.8 per cent in Q1 2012 and 44 per cent in Q4 2012.

You might be wondering as to how Gartner’s data rated Nokia, the beleaguered Swedish phone maker. Nokia saw its share dropping by 4.9 percentage points in the first quarter of 2013 mainly due to a steep decline in feature phone sales. This comes despite Nokia launching a series of smartphones and selling 5.1 million smartphone units. one main attribute for this could be because of the fact that Nokia has not yet focused on the lower-end smartphone crowd, an has instead gone for the high-end smartphone segment. Right now, Nokia’s position stands at a measly tenth in Q1 2013, while its position was eighth in Q4 2012. Nokia has been facing the ire of shareholders too- they have been complaining to its CEO Stephen Elop that Nokia is not trying hard enough in order to win abck lost market share.

It is common knowledge that Samsung uses Google’s Android operating system on all its smartphones, and thus it is no surprise that Gartner has claimed that Android continues to increase its lead with nearly 50 per cent more Android smartphones in the market than the previous year. Android had a 74.4 per cent share, while iOS had 18.2 per cent and BlackBerry had a paltry three per cent share of the operating system market in Q1 2013. This should alarm Apple and make it face the fact that somewhere down the line, the popularity of iPhones and iOS products might be decreasing.

Just two days back, Samsung announced that it had made the breakthrough for 5G speed data connectivity and is planning to operate the tech by 2020. In April this year, a market research firm released statistical data claiming that Samsung had now overthrown Nokia from overall sales leadership.

This study by Gartner clearly signals towards the changing trends in the consumer technology industry. Smartphones might slowly replace feature phones, and a time might come when Android(along with Samsung) might actually beat Apple and its other competitors, toppling the entire list of predictions of market share research firms make today. Additionally, I am of the opinion that despite a positive start, BlackBerry and Nokia ecosystems will indeed need some more time to grow and drive further competition and innovation within the smartphone and operating system marketplace.

Will be watching the mobile tech space for the next few months very closely and let’s see how things pan out exactly in the market.

Every news item that you read about spammers, spam attacks, the future of spam, etc. tells you one thing over and above all else – that the threat of spam attacks is only increasing and will continue to do so.

The new report by Kaspersky Lab on spam/spammers has something to say along similar lines. As per the report, unsolicited correspondence in email traffic grew slightly (+0.53% points) to reach an average of 66.55% in the first quarter of 2013. The increase in emails with malicious attachments was also less, growing by only 3.3%.

The thing of note here is that though spammers have now resorted to practises that had fallen out of use, primarily the practise of background noise that is often referred to as ‘white text’. In this type of spam, random pieces of text are added to the email. These insertions have the font in light gray and the background is a darker shade of gray. This spam ad is separated from the main ad in the email with a lot of line breaks. These spam ads/emails are considered by content-based spam filters as newsletters which results in them passing through the spam-filter test. Additionally, these are even harder to detect as they involve the use of random news fragments.

To top it all, the report says, the spammers are using links masked by two legal methods at once. First, they use the Yahoo URL shortening service and follow that up by linking it through Google Translate. The use of two trusted tech services gives these spam links a cover of authenticity.

While India has climbed down to the third spot on the Sophos Labs’ Spammiest Nation Chart, we clearly cannot let our guard down. So, the next time you think you’ve gotten a newsletter, you ought to think again.

This segment is estimated to show 30 per cent growth by the end of year 2013 and reach Rs 44,907 crore,” says the report.

The report further reveals that the remaining 27% of non travel transaction comprised of e-tailing, financial services, classifieds and other online services. It said that the non-travel industry is expected to mature by 41 per cent and reach up to Rs 18,060 crore by year end.

Talking about e-tailing the report says that purchases of various consumer product services like such as electronics, apparels, footwear, jewellery and other kitchen appliances contributes to 16% of overall e-commerce share. In 2012, laptops/net-books/tablets contributed 24.5 per cent of the total pie in e-tailing followed by apparels and footwear which contributed 20.6 per cent, the report said. Mobile phones, cameras, mobile and camera accessories together contributed to another 33 per cent last year. All the above mentioned categories form nearly four-fifth of the entire e-tailing pie.

Financial service transactions like paying insurance premiums and renewals, mobile and utility bills, trading shares and securities amounts to 6% of overall share. The financial service market was valued at 2,886 Cr in 2012 and is expected to grow by 25% to reach to 3,607 Cr by 2013. B2B and B2C Classifieds (jobs, matrimony, car, real estate etc.) contributed 5 percent, whereas other online services such as online entertainment ticketing, online food delivery, buying discounts/deals/vouchers etc. constituted 2 percent of the overall digital commerce market in 2012.

Conducted in top 35 cities of the country the survey further added that among 33.8 million active Internet users who access the Internet at least once in a month, there are 19.6 million users who look for detailed information regarding services. Of 19.6 million who accessed internet for finding details related to a specific product or a service, nearly 73 per cent actually bought a product or a service in the end. The percentage of people who access internet only for looking information related to various products and services decreased from 45 per cent in 2009 to 27 per cent in 2012.

A recent BCG report also says that the Indian internet user count will triple from the current 125 million to reach a final figure of 330 million in 2016 and digitally influenced purchases will reach $150 billion by that time. Considering these colossal numbers it is safe to say that the online shopping scenario is bound to grow leaps and bounds in coming days.

Microsoft, which is currently having a hard time encouraging developers to create apps for their Windows Phone 8 platform, is doing its best to entice the developers to join in the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem. Apart from that, it has always been introducing new features on their mobile operating system. In a recent blog post, the company has revealed evidence stating that Windows Phone 8 app downloads and revenue have increased to quite a noticeable extent since the last year, pegging the stat at around a 100%.

According to the tech giant, revenue of developers who provide paid apps to the Windows Store has risen to a dramatic 140%, while the overall market share has of Windows Phone 8 OS-based smartphones has grown to 2%.

In order to cash in on this development,Microsoft is directly aiming to increase the number of dedicated Windows Phone 8 app developers by extending the payout markets in emerging countries via Dev Center like Afghanistan, Iraq, Montenegro, Serbia, Timor-Leste and Ukraine. Additionally, the company has also added mobile operator partners, which offer a whopping three times more earning per specific app to Windows Phone Developers if the app buyer is paying for it with his carrier’s monthly invoice instead of using a credit card. They have added 15 new mobile operator billing partners since August 2012, bringing the total number of supported partners to 25 in 19 markets, surpassing Google Play and are looking forward to enlarge this particular feature in future.

On a final note, Microsoft has simplified app submissions process for developers. Apart from the recently added enabling cancelling submissions, rotating screenshots and automatic screenshot resizing, they have added the ability to review app submission, thereby giving potential developers a chance to check all the ends of their code before actually putting it up for review to their team.

Microsoft also points out in its blog post that that the Nokia ’s Lumia 720 and 520/521 phones “have just begun to ship across the globe, giving potential Windows Phone customers additional choices in form factor, phone capabilities, and price points.”

In other news, Microsoft integrated Skype into Outlook.com last week and it’s browser IE10 has doubled its market share, as per a report by NetMarketShare. Also, survey recently claimed that Windows Phone too is gaining traction in the smartphone arena.

I think this is great news for app developers themselves and even though I agree that the Windows Phone ecosystem is really young as of now, these type of incentives and developments from Microsoft’s side will only help the platform grow, become healthy and maybe even become a major threat to established mobile OSes such as Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. With increased support and downloads revenue, I believe the time is ripe for coders to begin Windows phone development.

A report by Symantec Corporation, which provides antivirus solutions, has revealed that Bot infections in India have catapulted to a level of 280% in its Internet Security Threat Report, Volume 18 (ISTR). The report also emphasized that this stat is a whopping 42% rise in global targeted attacks of the similar nature, than the earlier year.

These cyber attacks hit small and medium enterprises the hardest, which has been proven by the report that 31% of such attacks are aimed at SMEs.

According to the definition, Bots are programs that are covertly installed on a user’s machine in order to allow an attacker to control the targeted system remotely through a communication channel, such as Internet relay chat (IRC), P2P, or HTTP. These channels allow the remote attacker to control a large number of compromised computers over a single, reliable channel in a botnet, which can then be used to launch coordinated attacks. According to the report’s research, Bot-infested computers can be broadly classified as actively attacking bots or bots that send out spam such as spam zombies. Spam zombies are remotely controlled, compromised systems specifically designed to send out large volumes of junk or unsolicited email messages. The email messages can be used to deliver malicious code and phishing attempts.

The report has ranked India on top position globally when it comes to spam zombies. The report also pegged the spam zombies from India at a relatively high 17%. Additionally, the report has asserted that India is under obligation for spreading an approximate 280 million spam messages every day into the global cyberspace.

Cities like Bhubaneswar, Surat, Cochin, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam and Indore continue to witness an increase in bot infections, while recent cities to join this spam-creating list include Kota, Mysore and Ghaziabad.

Looking at the huge amount of infections being talked about here, it’s no wonder that India’s netizens are at fault for generating and spreading around 15% of the global spam.

Symantec publishes reports regularly so as to ascertain the overall health of the cyberspace. Recently, it conducted a ‘Mobility Survey’ for Consumers and Businesses.

There is no doubt that digital malware is growing. Last month, India was listed as the third most spam-generating nation in the world by Sophos Lab.

This report once again brings the debate of whether ISPs should cut off bot-infested computers to the spotlight. Regardless of the form bots might take, we probably won’t be able to eradicate the threat; we can only learn to better manage bot infestations. When it comes to generating such spam, Indians need to be given general awareness about cyber crime on the whole.

Global smartphones sales eclipsed those of feature phones for first time ever in the first quarter of 2013, as per the latest report from research firm IDC. The report revealed that 216.2 million smartphones were shipped accounting for 51.6% of all mobile phones shipped globally in the first quarter of 2013.

This marked the first time when smartphones have claimed more than half of all quarterly shipments.

Shipments of feature phones, totaled 202.4 million in the quarter. Total shipments of all mobile phones was 418.6 million, IDC said i its report. While IDC didn’t break down smartphone and feature phone shipments by region, previous reports from the researcher have suggested that much of the growth in smartphone shipments is taking place in emerging markets like China, Brazil and India.

“The days where phones are used primarily to make phone calls and send text messages are quickly fading away. As a result, the balance of smartphone power has shifted to phone makers that are most dependent on smartphones,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

IDC also noted the emergence of China-based companies, including Huawei, ZTE, Coolpad and Lenovo, among the leading smartphone vendors. In the battle for smartphone supremacy, Samsung stole the show by shipping 70.7 million smartphones and 115 million feature phones total during the first quarter. In fact, by the end of the quarter, Samsung shipped more units than the next four vendors combined, IDC said in its report. Apple remains the second-largest smartphone vendor, shipping 37.4 million iPhones. That’s an annual growth rate of just 6.6 percent, though, the slowest of the top five vendors. Other vendors like LG, ZTE and Huawei came in third fourth and fifth spot respectively.

Meanwhile, smartphone sale in Indian market has increased due to local players like Micromax and Karbon. I believe one of the main reasons for surging smartphones sales is due to drop in price of entry-level smartphones.

India has an urban Internet user base of 90 million and the Boston Consulting Group’s recent report titled ‘Buzz to Bucks: Capitalizing on India’s Digitally Influenced Consumers’ says that around 40% of this user base is significantly influenced to buy products based on digital activities like product research and price comparison. The study also predicts that the Indian internet user count will triple from the current 125 million to reach a final figure of 330 million in 2016 and digitally influenced purchases will reach $150 billion by that time. The report suggests that this increase will also give rise to an increased ‘digital influence’ which will in turn boost the buying decisions taken by the consumers.

The study was compiled by surveying 25,000 Indian consumers and their online activities across 101 product categories. BCG defines something called as Digital Intensity Index (DII) in their report. Categories which have high DII represent high digital activity among buyers. According to Arvind Subramaniam, a BCG partner and co-author of the study, air travel shows that second highest DII in the country and yet the value of this DII is only 20.6% of 100%. This, in his opinion, shows the amount opportunity which still exists for players to influence their consumers.

The study also shows that Indian men are more likely to be on the Internet (32% vs. 12%) as compared to women and more digitally influenced (14% vs. 4%). In terms of income, a large majority of internet enabled buyers are well to do but there is an 18% representation of low income consumers (annual income < $3000) who have internet access and among them 6% buy stuff on the internet. The penetration of the Internet is the highest in the age range of 18 to 24 years (48%) and the lowest in those older than 54 years (6%). The report states that the Internet will reach small towns earlier than retail outlets and thus online buying will see a boost by that logic. The choice of payments for goods will obviously be COD as there is yet no compelling payment solutions which might be simple enough for folks in rural areas to use given the very low credit card penetration. The report also pointed out that 37% of the people surveyed bought stuff online for the convenience of shopping from home, 30% bought stuff for the discounts and 29% like the variety that e-commerce websites provide compared to offline stores.

Overall the report seems to paint a very optimistic scenario for the future.

Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung has taken the lead in Indian mobile segment. In terms of pure sales the company has managed to surpass current leader Nokia. Market Statistics & tracking organization GfK-Nielsen collected the actual sales data & has been able to conclude that Samsung’s Volume Market Share, specifically in the urban areas, is now 31.4%. This is marginally higher than Nokia’s 30.1%.

The organization’s Urban Panel routinely tracks the sales data of almost 800 cities (population over 50,000). These areas are of critical importance to the mobile companies as over 70% of the entire country’s sale, originate here.

Samsung has surpassed Nokia before. However, that lead has somehow been a very short one & Nokia has been able to regain its leadership. Interestingly, this lead was specifically in the smartphone category, in which Nokia has been found to drag its feet. Samsung on the other hand has been very aggressive & has launched multiple models with varying screen sizes & needless to say, multiple price-points.

Additionally, taking note of these momentary patterns & trying to establish a firm dominance in the dynamic Indian market Samsung has deployed multiple strategies shared Vineet Taneja, Country Head (Mobile Phone & Digital Imaging) Samsung India, “Samsung has created new segments, such as the Note series or the Rex series, which was developed in India. We have developed a strong product portfolio straddling across entry-level smartphones till the premium segment”

Nokia, as a brand enjoyed a long & rewarding tenure in India. The company was once the de facto phone maker for the entire country & commanded over 80% of market share. However, failing to see the altering buyer preferences, routinely trailing innovation & even unable to compete with the cheaper Dual-SIM China Phones, the company faltered in all of the categories it once ruled. It might appear that Samsung took advantage of the situation, but the company has indeed led innovation & more importantly keenly observed the change in buyer mentality. What do you think?

As per a latest report from market research firm research2guidance, revenue generated with sensors connecting to an app will reach $5.6 billion by 2017. The firm believes that this segment of the market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 69 % and 61 million health sensors will ship in 2017.

Sighting further insights the report says that mHealth app based business models, which rely on sensors sales will play a major role in the mHealth market. mHealth apps are increasing the external sensors that can track a range of health metrics, such as blood pressure, heart rate, glucose level, medication compliance and more. These sensors then connect with the corresponding app via Bluetooth, WiFi or USB. Finally, the app analyzes, displays and shares the data that is being monitored by the sensors.

“The majority of sensors will track health parameters for sports and fitness purposes just as the existing hundreds of ANT+ sensors today”, explained Ralf-Gordon Jahns, Head of Research at research2guidance. The company estimates that there are currently about 200 external health-related sensors that can connect to smartphones and most are priced between $20 and $200. It touts that today’s app-connecting sensors are more consumer products than medical products. “With the boom of the smartphone app market, sensors which link to an app became fashionable products. They have got nothing to do with the grey and clumsy sensors that really looked like medical devices and that you would hesitate to show in public. Today’s app-related sensors are very designed just like the corresponding apps”, Jahn added.

Research2guidance further reveals that the market today is dominated by smaller sensor companies that first launched in 2009 or 2010, but larger sports and technology companies like Nike and Samsung are now taking serious efforts to enhance their health-related offerings. The firm also believes that health sensor companies will increasingly shift their business models from proprietary data silos to sensors that feed into multiple apps from third parties. The report concludes saying that smaller tech companies with less financial muscle will have to strive hard in order to catapult their user base. The mHealth market will become tough and they have to keep track with the innovation speed in the smartphone/app/sensor market.

Earlier in March, research2guidance estimated that over by 2017 3.4 billion people will have smartphones or tablets with access to mobile health apps and 50 percent of them will have downloaded health apps.

The mobile healthcare market has evolved remarkably in recent years mainly due to advent of smartphones and tablets. A recent Cisco study reveals that Indians are open to virtual healthcare. The Indian healthcare space has also seen traction lately. Major companies are coming together to push mHealth in the country. Moreover, the sector has seen a descent funding transactions in past few months.

I believe that healthcare is one of the best sectors in which technology and gadgets can play a definite role. I hope to see more and more developing countries apply these models.

The latest Mobile Life report by TNS Global has focused on an interesting aspect of user behaviour in the real world – Showrooming. The term describes the behavior of people who go into stores to test/check out products physically before buying them somewhere else. This behavior threatens physical shops and showrooms as consumers use them but do not generate sales. The report looked at how a focus on mobile could mitigate this behaviour among consumers globally.

The report was compiled based on the responses of 38,000 people across 43 countries. The insight that TNS seems to have gotten is that all these ‘showroomers’ use their mobiles when they go out to physical stores to check out prizes. Mobiles thus represent a way for brands to show their messages to the consumer when he/she is browsing in the store. These messages could be anything, but mostly they will end up being discounts, deals, loyalty points etc. so as to lure showroomers to buy from the store.

According to the report, about 11% of smartphone owners would like to get shopping coupons on their phone while shopping in the store. 14% of the shoppers would like an app to guide them around the store while 10% are interested in a ‘Virtual Shopping Assistant’ who will interact/engage/answer queries about products. The percentage values are very close to the global average and thus establish that Indian smartphone users would be open to brand related promotions on mobile while they are shopping. This insight should be leveraged by agencies and marketers to create some strong and compelling mobile strategies and solutions that can give sales a boost.

TNS has also released an infographic depicting the global results of the study. You can take a look at it below.

TimesJobs.com has released its third bi-annual edition of their comprehensive hiring report called ‘Recruitex’. The report gives information on the demand and supply of jobs in various sectors and the recruitment trends in India. As per the report, uncertainty in the global and domestic markets and policy fissures are resulting in slowdown in hiring. The report suggests that Automobile, Manufacturing and BFSI industry will continue its positive hiring momentum in 2013.

Here are the key findings of the report:

Industry Trends:

Cautious optimism ruled the recruitment industry during the July-December 2012 period

Automobile industry continued on the growth path and reported significant increase in hiring activity

The future of BFSI sector in 2013 is expected to be challenging yet full of opportunities, with lakhs of new jobs expected in the industry as lots of foreign banks are entering Indian markets.

FMCG is expected to generate 1.76 lakh new jobs in 2013. Hiring is likely to go up by 10-15%in the months of April May ’13

Infrastructure industry also saw hiring optimism in 2013 as this year will witness the impact of the economic reforms

The Indian Retail sector is pegged to create 10 million jobs by 2015 due. 2013 will be different due to the government relaxing investment norms and allowing 51%FDI in multi-brand retail and 100% FDI in single brand retail recently.

Healthcare sector witnessed disappointing performance in 2012 owing to global economic pattern change

Hiring through Tier II and III cities will become more and more evident in 2013, thereby giving visibility to rural talent.

IT-Telecom sector fell from July to December 2012 in most major locations and will continue in 2013. The telecom industry faced a lot of uncertainty in 2012 and that led to slow hiring in 2012

Location wise hiring:

Mumbai captured the maximum share (29%) of the total jobs created in BFSI industry during the July December ’12 period

Bengaluru lead the IT/Telecom industry with 34%

Among top locations, Kerala was the only region to clock growth (9%)in demand for talent. Pune was worst effected among top job locations, witnessing a drop of 33%in demand

Delhi/NCR and Bengaluru experienced a significant drop of 26% in overall demand of talent for Retail

In Automobile sector Delhi NCR witnessed the maximum (25%) share of the total jobs generate

Mumbai saw 4% growth in Healthcare sector while Bengaluru witnessed 31% drop in hiring

Social Media hiring emerged in 2012 as employers moved towards online social and professional networks to not only look for talent but also to build their employer brand among passive candidates. During the July-December 2012 period, demand for fresh/entry level candidates and senior professionals was upbeat in some industries. Sharing further insights on same Amit Jain, Business Head, TimesJobs.com, said, “While support functions saw growth in hiring activity; Sales and Business Development professionals emerged as the most in-demand profile early this year. Most organisations across industries are focused on manpower optimization – ‘hiring on demand’ rather than benching. Going forward, policy decisions will spur hiring, particularly in the BFSI and Retail Sectors.”

The report concluded saying that the collaboration between government, academia and industries is the need of the hour and it would provide a competitive edge to Indian recruitment industry in 2013.

All the information above (including data and images) are from the TimesJobs Recruitex report.

According to the latest State of the Internet report from Akamai Technologies, internet speeds (specifically broadband speeds) across the globe seem to be going up in a marked manner. The global average peak connection speed rose by 35% during the ending months of 2012. The State of the Internet report covers the last three months of 2012.

Global highlights:

1. The global average connection speed rose to 2.9 Mbps. This represents a 5% quarter on quarter increase.

2. As mentioned above, the global average peak connection speeds have found to have increased by 35%, which is a very good improvement. Hong Kong scored the highest in this parameter with a peak speed of 57.5 Mbps followed by South Korea at 49.3 Mbps.

3. Average connection speeds showed a growth of 25%. South Korea topped with a average speed of 14 Mbps and Japan followed with an average speed of 10.8 Mbps.

4. The rate of broadband adoption is around 42% for normal broadband and 11% for the higher speed (10 mbps and above). South Korea and Japan lead in this category by having 49% and 39% of the high broadband connections. South Korea seems to have the highest amount of broadband penetration at 84%. The US stands at 64%.

5. The average connection speed on mobile was found to range between 8 Kbps to 345 Kbps.

6. The report further cites an Ericsson finding that mobile data traffic rose to twice of what was recorded the year before in the ending quarter of 2011. The traffic rose by 28% between the third and fourth quarter of 2012 itself. This clearly shows the rather amazing adoption of mobile among global users and why companies and startups should be paying more attention to mobile as a compelling platform to provide their products and services upon.

We have not yet got a chance to look at the Indian numbers as we couldn’t find any official update regarding the report except for a post on GigaOM. We will update the numbers as soon as we come to know.

The online shopping scenario is changing with advent of mobile shopping aka m-commerce. A latest report by Draftfcb called “The Mobile Shopper: A 2013 Draftfcb Global Shopper Snapshot” confirms mobile’s march to dominance as a medium of choice for consumers. The report is based on interviews with 7,500+ consumers ages 18-64 in India, China U.S., U.K., Germany, Brazil, South Africa and Middle East (U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia). It reveals that mobile has and will continue to have a profound impact on shoppers and shopping due to shifting behaviors and attitudes.

The report says that shoppers are attached to their mobile devices for both emotional and functional reasons. About 72 per cent of the respondents said they “can’t live without” their mobile devices. “Mobile users in India and China have a strong connection with their phones and all of them see themselves using their devices more in the future,” Charles Cook, Global Planning & Research Analyst at Draftfcb said in a report. He also noted that this group typically used their phones to play games more than they did to make calls, and suggested there was an opening for brands to reach them via this route.

Talking about the Indian scenario, the report touted that 61% of mobile shoppers were male, marking the largest shift from the overall population in any market, and suggesting mobile is “empowering a more male-centric vision of shopping“. 45% of Indians have also used an e-wallet service and are likely to shop at from work or at home.

With mobile tending to turn everyone into shoppers, Debra Coughlin, Global Chief Marketing Officer of Draftfcb, observed there were huge implications for both brands and retailers. “The biggest challenge for marketers is to provide these ever more empowered consumers with the type of experiences that matter. Those who can do this effectively will win“, she concluded.

The Draftfcb report echos the current status of m-commerce market in India which is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 71.06 percent over the period 2012-2016, as per TechNavio’s analysts . Also according to a report in the next three years mobile commerce will constitute more than 25 per cent of the total traffic in e-retailing. Internet penetration and growth in use of smartphones and tablets will only catapult further thereby giving a push to m-commerce.

The days of the desktop PC are coming to an end, with a new study from Gartner revealing that most consumers now view tablets as their new main computing device. The shipment of global devices (personal computers, tablets and mobile phones) is expected to total 2.4 billion units in 2013, a 9 %increase from 2012, according to a Gartner study.

The study reveals that the proliferation of lower-priced tablets and their growing capability is accelerating the shift from PCs to tablets. Gartner predicts that device shipments will continue to manifold reaching to more than 2.9 billion units in 2017. The firm expects a 7.3% decline in the traditional desktop and laptop computer category this year, although ultramobile devices are expected to offset the decline slightly. The collective drop for these two categories is projected to be 3.5%.

Gartner projects global tablet shipments to total 197 million units in 2013, a 69.8% increase from 2012 shipments of 116 million units. “Lower prices, form factor variety, cloud update and consumers’ addiction to apps will be the key drivers in the tablet market. Growth in the tablet segment will not be limited to mature markets alone. Users in emerging markets who are looking for a companion to their mobile phone will increasingly choose a tablet as their first computing device and not a PC“, said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

The report reveals that smartphones are becoming more affordable, driving adoption in emerging markets and the prepaid segment in mature markets. Not surprisingly of the 2.4 billion units expected to be sold this year, 1.875 billion of them are expected to be mobile phones. One billion units of these mobile phones are projected to be smartphones, compared with 675 million smartphone units in 2012.

Gartner seconded the recent IDC’s report about Android tablets outselling Apple’s. The firm said Google’s Android continues to be the dominant operating system in the device market, and competition for the second spot will be between Apple’s iOS/Mac OS and Microsoft Corp.’s Windows.

I think that affordability and flexibility are the two most important factors that are responsible for growing demands of these devices. With launch of such smart devices increasing by day, there will come a time in near future when PCs will become obsolete. What do you think?

India’s online ad industry is growing and if anyone is having doubts about the massive potential that is seen in the digital advertising space, a look at the latest report jointly published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International will clear them all.

According to the report the online advertising market in India is projected to reach Rs. 2,938 crore by March 2014.

The online advertising space comprising search, display, mobile, social media, email and video advertising, which was valued at INR 1,750 Crores in March, 2012 has grown by 29% over the previous year to reach INR 2,260 Crores by March, 2013.

A further look into the study reveals that in FY 2012-2013, search advertising constituted about 38% of the total online advertising spend, translating to about INR 850 Crores while display advertising will form a sizeable 29% (INR 662 Crores).

Even though traditional media like television and newspapers still remain the preferred media for seeking information and entertainment and hog more than 80% of the advertising market in India, the Internet has been steadily increasing its share of the advertising pie.

Owing to rise in number of smatphones and tablets advertisements on such mobile devices grew from a 7% share in FY 2011-2012 to 10% of the Indian online ad market in FY 2012-2013, totaling to spends of around INR 230 Crores.

The report further says that social media, email and video advertising constitute 13% (INR 300 Crores), 3% (INR 68 Crores) and 7% (INR 150 Crores) of the online advertising market, respectively.

Mobile advertising includes a broad range of opportunities such as search, banner displays, messaging, multimedia messaging, video and advertising within apps. Mobile web advertising through banners and in-app advertising constitute about 80% of the mobile advertising market. Rise in mobile advertising is directly benefiting ad networks. Ad networks space is currently dominated by the likes of Komli, InMobi and others. According to the report the mobile advertising market is distributed among mobile web, SMS, MMS, mobile video and TV and in app advertising. It touts that the advertising viewed on mobile browsers or WAP forms 40% of the total mobile ad spends and mobile video & TV together with SMS and MMS advertising form another 20%. The remaining 40%, which is INR 92 Crores, is estimated to be spent on In-App Advertising, which is a premium form of mobile advertising especially on high-end devices like Apple’s iPad. All mobile advertising spends add up to of INR 230 Crores in FY2012-2013.

Finally, the report concludes saying that the BFSI, travel and auto sectors continue to be the top 3 spenders in online advertising. Increased spending by ecommerce players has been one of the highlights of the online advertising industry in FY 2011-12. Their share of spends is estimated to decline in 2012-13.

In India, especially by the end of 2013 there will be 200 million mobile internet users with 75 percent plus using Mobile Internet enabled feature phones. Such colossal numbers only indicate more and more scope for online advertising in India.

Symantec has unveiled the findings of two surveys, the ‘Symantec State of Mobility Survey 2013’ which focuses on key trends in the enterprise mobile space and the ‘Norton Cybercrime Report 2012’ which talks about the key trends in the consumer mobile space. Both the surveys are India-centric.

‘Symantec State of Mobility Survey 2013’

This survey focuses on Indian businesses and their use of mobility.

7 out of 10 businesses believed that the benefits of mobility outweigh or are equal to the risks involved

31% allowed unrestricted social media use and collaboration among employees

72% have faced mobility risks in the past 12 months alone and 37% have lost revenue due to the risks

The breakdown of various ‘risks’ and ‘attacks’ is as follows: 50% malware infections, 44% spam incidents, 34% exposures of information, 31% breaches due to lost/stolen devices and 28% phishing/social engineering instances

The good news though is that businesses are taking the necessary precautions to safeguard themselves against the attacks. While 45% have ensured that mobile devices that connect to the network have proper safeguards installed, 40% are restricting mobile device usage through HR enforcement, and 38% are using technology controls

‘Norton Cybercrime Report 2012’

The Norton Cybercrime Report 2012 focuses on the mobile trends emerging in India. An earlier survey done by Norton by Symantec had shed light on the mobile usage patterns of Indians.

69% Indians have internet connections on their mobile

68% agree to being addicted to their mobile phones

While 73% download apps from a trusted source only 1 in 3 use passwords to protect their phones

73% never save any important mobile information on their phone

40% do not use any security solution

As far as businesses are concerned, it is evident that they heavily rely on mobility in everyday business activities. However, there is the need to increase the safeguard efforts and upgrade the safety processes. As far as consumers are concerned, they are being cautious when it comes to accessing internet on the phone though they absolutely must actively adopt security solutions.

While mobiles will increasingly fall prey to attacks, it is up to you and me to protect our devices. What are the methods/steps you are following to stay secure?

The Asian School of Cyber Laws (ASCL) recently conducted a survey based on Cyber Security and what it means for school children across India. The survey covered more than 13,000 students of 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th standards in cities such as Pune, Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Patiala, Bhatinda and Nellore. The participants were also given out bookmarks specifically designed for the purpose and theme ‘Cyber Security.’

Asian School of Cyber Laws’ survey shed light on some really interesting stats and data as to the manner in which school-going children and the youth of the country view social networking sites and other similar mediums. According to the published report, social networking sites have indeed found an integral spot in the teens’ and school students’ life. Surprisingly, many underage students have also found using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. This comes as a shock since most social networking platforms have set age limits and other barriers in order to prevent children aged below 18 to access unsuitable content on the Internet. According to the survey, 67% school children stated having started using Facebook before the age of 10 and 82% of students reported having received vulgar, offensive or abusive emails or Facebook messages. It was alarming to note that almost 42% of students feel it is not a crime to use pirated software in India. The survey also revealed that 36% children did not know most of their their Facebook friends in real life and just added them as friends for the sake of it. With recent increases in instances of cyber bullying and stalking, this stat is quite significant.

Mr. Rohan Nagpal, the President also presided over the proceedings. He had something to say: “The survey revealed several shocking outcomes. This survey is an eye opener for various schools and family on how to ensure cyber safety norms for their children and keep them safe in the virtual world.”

ASCL is a pioneering institute in India in cyber law education, training and research. It has assisted the Government of India in framing draft rules and regulations under the Information Technology Act and drafting model rules for the functioning of Cyber Cafes. It has also assisted the Controller of Certifying Authorities in drafting regulations relating to the recognition of foreign certifying authorities. Among other things, ASCL has provided academic support to the National Consultation meeting on Enforcement of Cyber Law held at New Delhi on 31st January 2010 as well.

India has a social networking penetration of about five percent of the total population, and I expect these numbers to rapidly explode. And alarmingly, fifty percent of our Internet users don’t use a cyber security suite or solution to keep them protected whilst on the Internet. India is to gain around 6.6 crore social media users by June this year, and I’m betting most of these will be young students. Cyber security is therefore a priority and this survey conducted by ASCl is a good move towards the shift.

Cyber security involves protecting the information and systems we rely on every day—whether at home, work or school. Cyber security has been becoming a growing concern among the Netizens and also a complex challenge thanks to the rising sophistication of cyber attacks every day, especially among children and school students. I feel that it is very important for parents to take the time to be sure that children are not allowed to be on the Internet without a trusted adult monitor who will take the necessary steps to make sure that their children are not exposed to things that are not appropriate.

What do you have to say to this?

Phishers have already proved their criminal intent in the financial sector by causing losses of more than Rs. 130 crore to banks in the past three years itself through various sophisticated means. India is currently under a wave of cybercrime, and is experiencing rapidly rising phishing attacks across the country. Symantec, the security intelligence firm, has published the Symantec Intelligence Report which throws light on the Indian Information Technology sites that are vulnerable and exposed to phishing and fraud attacks of various sorts in the year 2012.

According to Symantec’s report, phishing attacks have increased 0.018 percentage, taking the global average rate to one in 466.3 emails (0.214 percent) since January 2013. The report has also specifically published details about the month of February 2013. As per the report, the number of URLs affected by phishing by cyber criminals associated with Indian sites were 0.15% out of the golbal phishing stats.

The report also clearly defines the particular category of Indian sites which are most affected by phishing. Education was the category with most number of affected sites in 2011, but dropped a position and came on the second position last year. Major regions of the country which hosted sites affected by phishing attacks included ion Technology(14.4%), Education(11.9%), Product Sales and Services (9.8%), Industrial and Manufacturing (7.3%), and Tourism, Travels and Transport (5.80%).

“This implies a new wave of phishing attacks among various organisations as the cyber criminals become highly sophisticated and targeted. Phishers continue to pursue Indian sites across many disciplines to host their phishing pages,” said the Symantec research. The research also stated that the possibility of secure government-related websites was really low and they were placed at the bottom of the list. This proves that only vulnerable websites of a specific category are attacked by phishers.

Apart from this, the Symantec Intelligence Report also gave out some best practices to follow in order to avoid phishing attacks.

Some of them include:

Do not click on suspicious links in email messages

Do not provide any personal information when answering an email

Do not enter personal information in a pop-up page or screen

Ensure that the website is encrypted with an SSL certificate by locking for the padlock, ‘https’, or the green address bar when entering personal or financial information

Update your security software, frequently, which protects you from online phishing

Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

I think the purpose of this report by Symantec should come as a wake-up call for the government and the general public against the rising threat they face against Cyber attacks, especially phishing. Also, corporate houses, like banks and other IT cos need to team up aggressively to work along with the government to prevent such attacks. Cybercrime is indeed a valid threat for Indians and there should be no complacency from both ends. In such a case, I think the government needs to go ahead quickly with forming a clear cyber security policy for the country. Earlier this year, Kapil Sibal had said that India was to have a clear cyber security policy soon, and I strongly feel that doing this will actually improve the Cyber security scenario in India.

ApnaCircle.com is a social media platform for professionals. Business, career and networking are the three pillars on which this social media site is built. In the recent past, ApnaCircle.com, which was founded by Mr. Yogesh Bansal and which is now a Viadeo Group Company, revamped its user-interface to enable easy navigation. It also launched a Blackberry app last year so as to woo the executive crowd. The site which is also armed with a Company’s Page is accessed by professionals though it has a long way to go vis-à-vis LinkedIn.

No matter the competition, platforms like ApnaCircle.com are here to stay and grow as there is a shift in ways in which companies are recruiting and individuals seeking jobs. For one, Indians (in particular) are spending 25% of their internet time on social media and thus, resumes are always getting more social.

Recently, ApnaCircle.com conducted a pan-India survey called –unimaginatively – ‘What Career Women Want’. The sample size of this survey was four hundred and the insights are not too surprising.

Here are a few findings of the survey:

40% women want to continue working after marriage and delivery a baby

42% want to work till the age of 50

More than 30% women expected a promotion within a year on job

65% women think the Indian society is male dominated

A few other parameters answered on the survey include the way women like to socialise – Mobile > Social Gatherings > Social Media and the professions women are likely to work in – Teaching-18%, HR & Admin-16%, IT & Marketing-11%.

I think the findings of the survey are pretty much in-sync with the viewpoints of most women around me. I don’t see any extraordinary information or insight coming out of this survey, though it does put a percentage on certain facts that are popularly known. If you are a woman reading this article, do you agree with survey? Let me know your thoughts.
