Twitter has announced that it will be partnering with two major satellite providers so that users around the world can get access to the micro-blogging platform. Tweeting via your Satellite connection is possible using Twitter’s SMS service.

Twitter was built to be a SMS service but it slowly took over the world wide web to become a phenomenon. They have partnered with Iridium and Thuraya, two of the world’s largest satellite communication providers. This is to make access to Twitter as easy as possible. Up until now, Twitter could be accessed from smart phones and web but in a country like ours, not everyone has access to smart phones and the web in some cases. How then do they access Twitter? Twitter via SMS is one possibility but it depends on mobile carriers and not all carriers support this. Still you can tweet from your mobile phone using these long codes. So far, these long codes have only been set up for UK, Germany and Finland. Satellite services are universal and this might help more and more people access Twitter.

Twitter’s rationale behind this move is to make unbroken accessibility to the service possible in war-torn countries and distant places with very less connectivity.

Twitter SMS: Now available for satellite providers blog.twitter.com/2012/02/twitte…

— Twitter (@twitter) February 9, 2012

Another important aspect of Twitter is increasing the accessibility of the service from the real-time news perspective. Emergencies and other happenings can easily be tweeted and followed now by many more people. We earlier wrote about how Twitter has changed its policies recently to allow more freedom of speech.

What do you think of this new feature? Will it help reaching out to more people or result in an information overload? Share your thoughts with us.

Microsoft has announced that it will release a test/beta version of its upcoming Desktop operating system, Windows 8. The operating system was revealed some time back and promises to be the next big upgrade to Microsoft’s Windows. Windows Vista was generally considered a failure but its successor Windows 7 got its act right. Windows 8 will be the Redmond giant’s answer to modern operating systems offerings from Apple and Google.

Windows 8 marks the entry of Microsoft’s entry into the tablet segment with its UI and features which are specially tailored to tablets. The operating system sports a new and refreshing UI called Metro. This Metro UI syncs in well with their Tile UI in Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone has still not gained mainstream popularity as compared to Android and iOS but with a solid combination of a hardware and developer support, Windows may finally support a full fledged computing ecosystem just like Apple has done.

Microsoft will also unveil their version of an App Store which fill feature starter apps which will let people see what the Operating System has in store in terms of Apps. Microsoft had already started building relations with developers for their desktop and phone products.

Will Windows 8 be a better tablet operating system than iOS and Android? Let us know your thoughts.

Ybrant Digital, an online marketing company, has been retained by Microsoft India to cater to cities outside Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore. In a bid to expand in Metros beyond the aforementioned, MS India has appointed Ybrant Digital to sell its ad inventory for media properties on MSN, Windows Live, and Bing. Ybrant further boasts partnerships with global publishers such as Facebook, Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Viacom. With team work spread over 140 Ad Agencies, we believe Ybrant can better leverage MS’s ad inventory.

Ybrant can offer a much better competitive edge feels a confident Suresh Reddy, chairman and CEO of Ybrant Digital, “Ybrant will provide businesses with an option to advertise with premium media properties owned by Microsoft. We will ensure maximum RoI (Return on Investment) on the advertising rupee spent by our advertisers across the region”.

Over the past few months, we have witnessed tremendous growth potential in Tier II & Tier III Cities and towns. As larger cities become saturated, such towns will act as growth drivers as opportunities still lie untapped. India’s population is increasingly going online & purchasing even their daily needs. In fact Internet penetration might be the only hurdle preventing growth. In fact, of India’s total internet population of 112 million, non-metro cities account for approximately 68 per cent of people who log on in such smaller towns.

Under such circumstances, it is now vital for large websites to focus beyond the golden quadrilateral. What do you think?

Foursquare has announced the launch of an updated version of “Explore” for iPhone and android devices. This will club all the features of Foursquare on web from filtering, photos till location changing abilities.

Users are now asked to update their mobile app to see the new changes in “Explore”. This gives a boost to Foursquare‘s local guide rolled out with friend’s recommendations as well as tips and comments from users. So Foursquare is now your local search engine helping yo to explore places by categories like “coffee”, “burgers” and more. The “Specials” will throw light on the offers from those places and you can also check the mayor discounts on checking in.

The most intriguing aspect of “Explore” is the filter button. You will see that button on the right in iOS and at the bottom in Android. This will help you to narrow down search results and get more specific answers to your search. You will find interesting options like “New to me” or even see places your friends have been to. The discover mechanism is something that adds to the dynamism of “Explore”. So you can find out new neighborhoods, beyond your current location by typing the name or by dragging the map. This will be in accordance with your phone’s GPS reach.

Foursquare quoted on “Explore, “When you do a local search on many other services, you get a ‘one-size fits all’ set of results. But with foursquare Explore, we’re using your check-ins and your friends’ check-ins, along with the more than 1.5 billion check-ins from the rest of the foursquare community, to personalize recommendations for you. And every time you check in, foursquare gets better at finding places you’ll like”. The idea is to localize search and build a local village on this planet. So with smart “Explore” now you can where your friends go, search where you want to go, offers and more on the go.

With the 2G Spectrum Auction being considered null and void, and a new 2G Spectrum Auction being reordered, number of firms were severely affected. However, out of the 22 Licenses which were cancelled, Uninor was affected the most. They had, by far, the maximum number of users on their newly formed network and had the most to lose.

Uninor is a joint venture between Unitech Group and Telenor. They employ over 17,000 people and have 36 million customers. In a short amount of time, they managed to make a place for themselves in the market by competing almost solely on price. They have one of the lowest Average Revenues Per Customer (ARPU). With a focus on Voice services instead of data, Uninor did not participate in the 3G Spectrum Auction.

On the cancellation of the 2G licenses, Uninor has threatened to shut shop and quit the Indian market and challenge the cancellation in a international court. However, given that they are in over 13 Circles and have 1900 distributors country wide, it is not such an easy thing to do. Now Uninor seems to have softened their stance of leaving the Indian market.

Says Uninor MD and Telenor’s Asia head, Sigve Brekke, “In principle we will go for auction but I am not saying that whether we will win everything … So, the option of exit cannot be ruled out. We will be coming out with advertisement for our customers assuring that we are very much here. This means we will continue to serve our 36 million customers, work with our 22,000 partners and keep building our presence in the market.”

Interestingly, the Norweigan Government has a 54% stake in Telenor and hence pressure on India to stay the cancellation is not unlikely. In fact, Norway’s IT minister, Rigmor Aasrud met Kapil Sibal, to discuss the Supreme Court’s cancellation of licenses.

The battle between the mobile operating systems is getting interesting. There are only two of them at the top, iOS and Android. Many an article and blog post have tried to explain why one is better than the other. iOS is currently at 5.0.1 and Android is at 4.0.3 in terms of version numbers and both bring roughly the same features to the table. Android has introduced some new features like Bump and Face Recognition with Ice Cream Sandwich. According to many developers iOS is a closed system in terms of modding, customizing and hacking whereas Android is open. Both these approaches are unique and have their own benefits although iOS has been said to have the best apps and consistent user experience in its ecosystem.

According to a latest study by mobile application monitoring company Crittercism, iOS apps crash much more often than Android apps which is a surprising thing. Apparently, more applications are crashing specifically in iOS 5.0.1 amounting to as much as 28.64% as compared to the latest Android releases. One possible explanation is that the iOS release is new and app developers might not have made their apps compatible to it but this does not explain the crashes that occur in the previous version iOS 4.3.3. This comes up to some 10.66%. Android 4.1 has a crash rate of 1.04% thus making it the most stable operating system out there in terms of app performance.

Check this graph out and the picture will be clearer.

According to Forbes, Crittercism analyzed over 214 million app using its service between November and December 2011. While iOS added three times the number of apps launched on Android, the analysis is based on percentage and not absolute numbers, thereby making the study fair.

Here’s a pie chart that shows both iOS and Android versions and their normalized crash rates.

A good number of people are still using older iOS versions. This maybe due to ‘jailbreaks’ or simply because they are not bothered. Thus if people don’t update their existing apps then all the ‘fixes’ are missed thus making the OS vulnerable to more crashes.Do you own an iPhone or an Android? Do your apps crash often? Tell us in the comments section.

It is interesting to note that Junglee.com which marked the entry of Amazon in India, has been pulling in flocks on Indian shoppers. In fact it has accumulated one sixth of Flipkart users.

The footprints of Indian shopper on Junglee.com is growing healthily and Alexa information analytics shows that there are nine pages per visit and users are staying on the site for approximately seven minutes. This is incredibly good as users on Ebay have a record of spending ten minutes or more. Mahesh Murthy, CEO and founder of Pinstorm says, “It’s very interesting to note how Amazon’s Junglee.com has been able to draw visitors to its site within a few days of launch and without spending any rupee on marketing or traffic building.”

The best part of the story is that Junglee.com has users from Amazon and this has boosted the traffic figures by nearly 70%. Junglee.com plays a fair game and has molded itself into a marketplace for all e-commerce needs. It has alliances with online and offline retailers naming HomeShop18, Dabur, Hidesign and also has partnered with deal sites such as Snapdeal and others like Univercell and more. Online sales are a hit and the Managing Director of Gitanjanli Group also submits to this fact that Amazon plays a huge role in growing their hits per day. “We are excited to give customers in India a single online starting point where they can shop a wide selection of products sold by local and global retailers,” says Amit Agarwal, vice president of Amazon.com

However there are mixed views on this. Some Indian players feel that for Amazon Junglee.com is just a entry point and to understand the sentiments and buying patterns of Indian shoppers on the web. Sandeep Komaravelly, Head, Marketing and Alliances, Snapdeal, feels that the sudden rise in the traffic of Junglee.com is just a hype created by the announcement of Amazon to enter India. This has given a spark of curiosity to Indian Internet users and will not last for long. He says, “It is too early to quantify the increase of hits or users that we have seen in the last four days because of our partnership with Amazon. We already get over one million visitors on Snapdeal.”

To wind up, the inference is that the India has 60 million Internet users and 10 million are online shoppers. India’s retail sector has a $US550 billion ($A515.2 billion) valuation as reported by the India Brand Equity Foundation. So the industry is growing with many more players to join the league.

The Internet is one of the last remaining free communication tools in the world. Communication is important, may it be social or business. Sadly, communication is also important for radicalism and extremism to spread. According to British Lawmakers, the Internet has become an important factor in nurturing the extremist threat, surpassing universities and prisons as a place where dangerous ideas are developed and traded.

This is indeed true. So how are they planning to deal with this?

“We remain concerned by the growing support for nonviolent extremism and more extreme and violent forms of far-right ideology,” the Home Affairs Committee said in its report from a nine month inquiry.

More from the Committee, “The Internet was now one of the few unregulated spaces where radicalization is able to take place and played a greater role in promoting violence than prisons, universities or places of worship”.

Britain has been involved in a number of terrorist bomb plots. July 2005 saw the suicide bombings which struck the city’s transit system. More recently, the authorities have managed to thwart one of the largest terrorist plots yet. The Committee also maintained that Universities and Prisons are the most likely areas for people to spread their radical ideas.

The Committee’s chairman, Keith Vaz said, “More resources need to be directed to these threats and to preventing radicalisation through the Internet and in private spaces. These are the fertile breeding grounds for terrorism.”

The lawmakers are calling for more stringent monitoring of the Internet and Social networks so that such plots can be exposed at an early stage and inflammatory content on the Internet can be removed as soon as it is possible. This is a very sticky spot for everyone. There is that aspect of freedom on the web one hand and radicalism on the other. There is no easy way to do this. Monitoring content on the Internet would ultimately amount to significant invasion of a user’s privacy and there many civil groups that are opposed to this.

Instead of focusing on invasive tactics, Governments should instead focus more on the safety and security at public places. Educating the people about their safety and also asking them to report anything unusual they see on the Internet is also a good idea. The India Government is currently in a dispute with many Social Media companies over ‘objectionable content’ on their sites. Wouldn’t you call this radicalism? How do you define radicalism and should it only be about Islamic radicals? All these questions need to be asked. The Government can then formulate what constitutes radicalism and direct social networking sites to remove them.

In our world, there is no way we can stop people from communicating to each other without breaching privacy.

What would you suggest? Do let us know what you think.

Mankind’s basic need is to stay & feel connected. This is echoed perfectly in Facebook data analyst, Inside Facebook Gold’s 2011 data which revealed that India was the third biggest Facebook market after US and Indonesia.

In terms of growth rate, at 162.4 per cent, India is second only to Brazil. No wonder, Facebook finds India indispensable.

We tried to analyze the reasons:

Orkut was the pioneer of Social Networking. Facebook, which still respects Orkut, however, swept the ground from under its feet. We think, owing to Orkut’s cluttered interface & growing menace of SPAM, users, slowly but steadily shifted towards the simpler & fun to use interface of FB. On the other hand, Google+ may be growing, but it has still to go viral in India. Guess FB has the first mover advantage here? One might say, Orkut pulled-in the crowd & Facebook kept them engaged!

FaceBook has always maintained a streamline approach & “The Wall” concept was simply brilliant. It did jolt us with the “Timeline” (that was customized for phones too), but people seem to be slowly warming up to the idea.

With increasing access to internet, Indian professionals bogged down by work found a fresh breeze to interact not just with present friends, but track & befriend long lost buddies as well as revealed by Rituparna Borah from Assam, “I use Facebook to connect with my friends with whom I am not in regular touch with.”

With games heavily based on Social interaction, Facebook once again captured the idle time of India Youth. So much so, that they prefer to while away time than seriously pursue work!

Though we are seeing some people who are starting to alienate themselves from this time consuming “menace”, the user-base of FB is growing steadily. We can only see further growth as cheaper Internet becomes easily accessible.

Google’s Asia-Pacific operations MD, Shailesh Rao has bid adieu & joined the world’s largest Micro-Blogging Site Twitter.

Shailesh Rao who was heading the Media & Platforms Dept. of Google’s Asia-Pacific operations, will now join Twitter as VP International Operations. Shailesh migrated to Google India in 2007 from the Company’s California HQ where he was working as director for the search business. Google is in fact happily bidding farewell, “We thank Shailesh for his fantastic contributions to Google and Google India, in particular, and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Shailesh draws with him a large vault full of experience garnered while working at Google. Twitter, who is trying to enhance its revenue by introducing an advertising platform will do well with him at their side. We all know Google’s bread & butter has been advertising. On Twitter’s side it was just clever promotions via tweets that go viral. Shailesh, with his MBA from Kellogg & BS from Wharton, will certainly strike a beautiful balance between what people talk about & what companies want them to talk about.

Twitter, who is indirectly competing with other social media networks such as Facebook, growing its operations in the markets outside of the US is vital. With Shailesh at its helm, we can surely expect he will help Twitter garner revenues from advertisers in Asia and elsewhere as it steadily progresses to wards a global ad push.

Google’s Social Networking has been growing steadily. However, so have complaints of malpractice using its Adwords. That too, in India! Shailesh spearheading the International Operations makes us wonder, has Twitter hired him as a precautionary measure?

Google’s Android ecosystem has been getting a lot of flak since malicious apps were discovered in the Android Market last year. Google had to remotely swipe off these entire app from every user’s phone. Besides the fact that kind of access into my personal phone is a little creepy, this ‘remote swiping’ did not actually offer a solution since Google would find out about these apps only after they had infected user’s phone. Now, Google has announced that they may have finally have the solution to this problem it’s called the ‘Bouncer’. The Bouncer is a server side application which scours the apps that have been submitted to the Market to find out about any malicious activity. This service will not only check for new applications but will also scan pre-existing apps. “Device activations grew 250% year-on-year, and the total number of app downloads from Android Market topped 11 billion,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of engineering, posted on the Google Mobile Blog. “As the platform continues to grow, we’re focused on bringing you the best new features and innovations — including in security.”

“Here’s how it works: once an application is uploaded, the service immediately starts analyzing it for known malware, spyware and trojans. It also looks for behaviors that indicate an application might be misbehaving, and compares it against previously analyzed apps to detect possible red flags. We also analyze new developer accounts to help prevent malicious and repeat-offending developers from coming back.”

Google is basically simulating all the new and old apps on its Cloud infrastructure and seeing if the app is malicious or does anything out of the ordinary. Google is best known for automating things and processes. They have always placed a heavy emphasis on machine learning and this is quite evident in their search engine. Android also features something called as ‘sandboxing’ which does not allow one instance of a running app to interact with other other apps or components on your phone. This same technology is present in their Chrome OS.

Here’s a excerpt from the blog which talks about Android’s security features:

In addition to using new services to help prevent malware, we designed Android from the beginning to make mobile malware less disruptive. In the PC model, malware has more potential to misuse your information. We learned from this approach, designing Android for Internet-connected devices. Some of Android’s core security features are:

Sandboxing: The Android platform uses a technique called “sandboxing” to put virtual walls between applications and other software on the device. So, if you download a malicious application, it can’t access data on other parts of your phone and its potential harm is drastically limited.

Permissions: Android provides a permission system to help you understand the capabilities of the apps you install, and manage your own preferences. That way, if you see a game unnecessarily requests permission to send SMS, for example, you don’t need to install it.

Malware removal: Android is designed to prevent malware from modifying the platform or hiding from you, so it can be easily removed if your device is affected. Android Market also has the capability of remotely removing malware from your phone or tablet, if required.

No security approach is foolproof, and added scrutiny can often lead to important improvements. Our systems are getting better at detecting and eliminating malware every day, and we continue to invite the community to work with us to keep Android safe.

Android, as a mobile operating system was considered less safe when compared to Apple’s stringent process of App approval. With Bouncer, Google seems to have killed that fear. This has been hailed by many as a welcome move for Android and the community of users especially with the Android usage and app consumption rising high in India. Let us see how hackers and malicious coders get around this new security measure.

Facebook is ready to make history with the biggest ever IPO in American history. Interestingly, while filing the paperwork with the SEC, Facebook acknowledged some other tech heavyweights as its competitors. And who are these competitors? Google, Microsoft and Twitter. Nothing surprising. Facebook clearly has an advantage over these other companies in terms of social networking.

While filing with SEC, Facebook released the following statement:“We face significant competition in almost every aspect of our business, including from companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Twitter, which offer a variety of Internet products, services, content, and online advertising offerings, as well as from mobile companies and smaller Internet companies that offer products and services that may compete with specific Facebook features.”

As expected, Facebook singled out Google as it main competitor.
“We compete broadly with Google’s social networking offerings, including Google+, which it has integrated with certain products, including search and Android”.

It also said that some its rivals have significantly better resources and dominating positions in certain markets when compared to Facebook. They are obviously talking about Google here.

“Certain competitors, including Google, could use strong or dominant positions in one or more markets to gain competitive advantage against us in areas where we operate including: by integrating competing social networking platforms or features into products they control such as search engines, web browsers, or mobile device operating systems; by making acquisitions; or by making access to Facebook more difficult. As a result, our competitors may acquire and engage users at the expense of the growth or engagement of our user base, which may negatively affect our business and financial results.”

Facebook is also monitoring start-ups and upcoming social networks that happen to provide the same offerings as Facebook. This includes Social start-ups like Path and Pinterest. Facebook is also looking at local social networks in countries like India, China, Japan and Korea.

How Microsoft would be listed as a competitor is still not clear. Facebook faces competition from traditional media and online media businesses in terms of Ad-serving platforms and Ad budgets. Well, that is a lot of competition but then Facebook is that huge a company. We are waiting anxiously for this IPO to unfold. We will keep you updated.

The humble mobile phone, which started out as an instrument to simply make and receive phone calls, has evolved into so much more. Its use cases have been so extensive that it is impossible for anyone to have predicted it. Mobile phones have already made redundant the calculator, the music player, the GPS Navigation System and have changed the way people work. With the boom of smartphones and mobile applications, cell phones may soon replace another person: the travel agent.

In the words of Scott Durchslag, president, Expedia Worldwide, Travel is intrinsically a mobile experience. Hence mobile phones and hotel and travel bookings go together like bread and butter. This is why consumers are using their cell phones to make hotel reservations and alter travel plans at an increased rate each year.

A number of International Hotel chains have recognized the need and supplied Mobile Apps and Mobile Websites. In December last year, Marriott International launched free Android and iOS Apps, giving customers access to 3,900 hotels across 13 brands in 71 countries, 16 hotels of these being in India. The app enable travellers to find nearby hotels, make or cancel bookings, check-in, join Marriott’s customer reward programme and find out what’s happening in the local area. The Marriott smartphone apps and website attract 31 lakh visitors from across the world annually.

One such user is Srimanth Raghav, a Pune-based financial investor who uses the iPhone Marriott app extensively. “It’s convenient to have an app that enables bookings at the last minute. As a business traveller, most of my visits are decided at the spur of the moment and cannot be planned in advance.” says Srimath.

Other chains like ITC Hotels and the InterContinental Hotels Group too have their own dedicated smartphone apps. These apps are a boon for regular travellers who require instant confirmation and portability. For younger travellers, who may be on a budget, there exist a slew of travel-deal websites like Kayak and TripAdvisor, which provide special deals and travel cum hotel packages via there online portals. We can picture only growth in the future of Mobile Travel Bookings in India with the increasing penetration of internet enabled mobile devices.

What do you think? Will Mobile Bookings soon become a mainstream alternative to the travel agent or will people stick to their old ways? Do let us know in the comments below.

It is IPO time in Techland once again. Facebook, the world’s biggest social networking service is finally going to file its IPO soon. This IPO has been discussed to no end since the rumors came out some 2-3 months ago. The facts are finally here. The company has planned to file a $5 billion initial public offering.

This happened yesterday when the company handed over the necessary paperwork to regulators. It has selected financial majors Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and JP Morgan to manage the huge IPO. Morgan Stanley will be in a pivotal role in the management of this IPO.

Let us put that IPO sum in perspective. Google filed an IPO worth $1.4 billion in 2004. Groupon raised$750 million and got a valuation of $13 billion dollars which was half of the expected valuation. Zynga performed miserably in its IPO filing in this December but still managed to raise $1 billion and get a valuation of $7 billion which was way lesser than the expected $20 billion. Here, you see a trend where all these IPO’s are seemingly steep in expectations and that too when the economy is in a bad place. Investor trust in Tech companies is not very strong these days and this effects the valuation of most major Tech companies.

But will Facebook be different? It all depends. Considering the IPO history of the previously mentioned companies, Facebook might not reach $100 billion mark so easily. But then again, it just might consider how everyone seems to go gaga over it. The $5 billion amount is just a preliminary target and this will increase depending on investor demand in the coming months. Nonetheless, this marks the biggest ever US market debut in history and this is a company started by a college kid in his dorm-room. Let us see where this goes..

What are your thoughts on Facebook’s IPO? Do let us know.

Cyber terrorists are deriving sadistic pleasure out of the fact that most of the Facebook users are grimacing about the new timeline feature. The timeline did not gain much appreciation from the Facebook country people since it reveals personal log of a person in details right from the date he or she has been online. Many users have expressed their dislike for this as many do not wish to share their details with all and sundry. Facebook’s timeline will soon be made mandatory and will enable anyone to go through Facebook profiles by date. The cyber security vendor ESET exclaimed, “A lot of people will decide that they don’t like Timeline and start looking for ways to revert to their old profiles. Scam artists and ‘clickjackers’ are getting ready for that day, offering bogus links on Facebook that promise Timeline removal.”

It is a feast time for the cyber rogues who will rush into this scenario where users are unhappy with timeline. So these miscreants are trying to attract people with false “Like” buttons, inviting them to see Youtube videos, asking to invite friends and more. This will only lead to an extension with a malware containment zone.

If the Cyber pirates have let out to harm the web security, there must have been some warning from Facebook with regard to deactivating Timeline to evade this issue. Stephen Cobb, security evangelist for ESET expressed his anguish by saying, “Unless Facebook changes its mind and makes Timeline optional, the bottom line is that you will have to live with it and avoid the temptation to click on links promising to help you deactivate, remove, or disable Timeline.”

However on another note the Facebook timeline is kind of a way of shaking users who have not been careful in the past of their activity on the web. Yes now this will push people to maintain a clean chit and share only what they want to. This will keep a check on whom users are sharing with and what. So the timeline is what Garaham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos says, “The Timeline was the catalyst to reassess my relationship with Facebook. After all, a website that holds details of your entire life, likes and loves, is gold dust for scammers.”

It is time that we all realize how we want others to picture our profile.

We wrote earlier how Twitter censoring some tweets based on requests by Governments is detrimental to social communication as a medium. This caused an outrage on the social network and Tweeps protested this announcement with #TwitterBlackout. Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo has argued that Twitter is still transparent and the current policies are for the good for the communications platform.

Costolo argued that Twitter’s new policy is in fact helping freedom of speech. He said that earlier if a Government demanded that Twitter remove a tweet or block a user, they had to comply. Now with the new policies the content will be censored but only in the country that has demanded it. Twitter will try its best that they do not go ahead with this but if the demands are rigid then they will only censor the content in that country. This is actually a very good thing. If you tweet something considered to be against the law, your tweet will still be visible to the world even though it may be blocked in your own country. This may actually give rise to better journalism and reporting. Behind the closed walls of a country, we could still get a glimpse of the situation or breaking news in that country.

“There’s been no change in our stance or attitude or policy with respect to content on Twitter,” Costolo said. “What we announced is a greater capability we now have. Now, when we are issued a valid legal order in a country in which we operate, such as a DMCA takedown notice, we are able to leave the content up for as many people around the world as possible, while still operating within the local law. You can’t operate in these countries and choose the laws you want to abide by.”

In my previous blog post, I was very harsh on this new policy because Censorship of any kind is absolutely intolerable, but considering the various nuances of this policy has made me believe that this may indeed be one of the best loop-holes discovered to aid Freedom of Speech. There however remains the aspect of people in the blocked country not being able to view any content. Well, Proxy Servers and anonymous routers might be able to do the trick for them.

What do you think about Twitter’s new policy? Do let us know.

Once, BlackBerry was the default choice of enterprise customers for their communication needs. But, that is changing fast, especially in the established markets like North America and Europe, according to a New York Times report.

Apple has captured a significant market share from Reserach In Motion (the makers of BlackBerry) in North America, where it once was a dominant player. Samsung is slated to do the same in the other established market of RIM i.e. Europe with its Android operating system. BlackBerry is still going strong in developing markets. But, it is finding it difficult to hold on to its market share in more developed countries. While Apple Inc’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android operating systems have captured a lot of imagination, RIM has failed to innovate in recent years. Hence, many enterprise customers are switching from BlackBerry to other platforms.

According to a recent global survey on information workers by research firm Forrester, 27% smartphone users have Android, 26% BlackBerry and 24%, an iPhone. “Android and Apple together are eating BlackBerry’s lunch,” said Frank Gillett, a Forrester analyst.

Last year, Blackberry Servers had gone down, sending millions of people across the globe into a frenzy. the servers were down for 4days. after the issue was solved to make it up to the customers Blackberry maker RIM offered all the customers 12 premium apps free of cost. And recently it was also reported that both the CEO’s stepped down from their position. Was this a good news ot bad only time can tell?

The one asset that RIM can still bank on is security. But, that won’t be for too long, since other players are also addressing this issue. Some of Samsung’s new phones, like the Galaxy S II, include extra security features for enterprise customers. The newest version of Google’s Android operating system, called Ice Cream Sandwich, has built-in encryption.

RIM is aware of its problems and is taking a number of steps to address them. It recently brought a new CEO on board in the form of Thorsten Heins. Heins is betting big on BlackBerry’s new operating platform called BlackBerry 10 or BB10. But, this has also received a severe jolt, since the new OS won’t be ready before late 2012. Now, it’s hard to imagine that enterprise customers will be ready to wait for that long.

Why is Twitter insanely popular? That is because it is the perfect tool to send out byte sized opinions and news. It’s micro-blogging nature, the presence of Celebrities and even Politicians are the biggest things going for it as a social communications platform.

As last year came to a close it was the star when it came to generating buzz, but the real question is, ‘Is Twitter looking at a new direction?’The first indication of this comes from the Twitter 3.0 design that they pushed out last year. The design was awesome and was consistent even on its mobile apps. They added ‘Home, ‘Connect’ and ‘Discover’ tabs to the interface and let go of the old ones like ‘re-tweets and mentions’. Twitter doesn’t want people using third-party clients either. Here, the ‘Discover tab’ is of some significance. When you click on it it you are treated to a very visual kind of summary of the days trending topics. Here’s an example:

Now look at the latest startup that Twitter has acquired recently.

Looking at the way things are organized, it looks like Twitter acquired it just for the sole purpose of integrating their technology into the Discover tab. Twitter is now addressing the fundamental problem with Social Networks, ‘Information Overload’! With Facebook and its Open Graph protocol letting loose hundreds of social apps on the service, there is a real problem of content curation and aggregation. We have written about this before and how it will ultimately damage Social media. Summify is Twitter’s key. The service accesses the most relevant content and arranges it in a clean and neat manner. Basically, it cancels out the noise that is generated by large scale sharing of multiple content. Summify will stop its service and will be directly integrated into Twitter. Expect something awesome to show up on Twitter in a few months!

Content and Curation on Social Media and the Internet have always been kind of a challenge. The floodgates of information are already collapsing and it is a problem right now when you want to look at the best and relevant articles and content. Google+ and Facebook have some sort of noise controls but Twitter, sadly lacks this. There are whole new wave of startups which are founded on the basis of ‘clearing the crap’ and discovering awesome content e.g Pinterest, Flipboard, Summify, Google Currents.

Spammers are the party-poopers when it comes to the Internet. Yes, the web helps us in discovering new information, connecting with other people and increasing our productivity. This has been going for a long time since the advent of the Internet but no one has come close to removing this threat and annoyance from the web in its entirety.

Cyber Criminals always seem to be one step ahead.

Even Google has not yet perfected its algorithm to detect and filter spam which is why we still end up with some ‘Lottery Winner’ mail in my inbox. The cases of spam, e-mail scams, phishing and general online malpractices are on the rise in India and the world and for once everyone is concerned about it. Some of the biggest Internet companies are teaming up with banks and coming up with a new approach to battling spam online. Banks are involved in this because majority of these cyber-criminals pose fraudulently as banks when they are sending out their ‘phishing’ emails. A person’s bank account credentials can easily be gotten if they person interacts with such a mail due to unawareness or sheer conviction of the mail being legit.

Facebook, Microsoft and Google will be joining hands with the bank of America, Fidelity Investments and PayPal so that they can once and for all sort out this mess. Apparently, the only way to defeat these spammers is to set up a new standard when it comes to authenticating incoming e-mails. Two existing authentication technologies, SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) are being considered for the new standard. These technologies are highly effective but not widely adopted. Thus for wider adoption, they need the support of these big companies so that they can lobby to make it a standard across their services.

Currently, PayPal is the only service which uses these two new technologies to fight against fraudulent emails in partnership with Yahoo and Google. The group DMARC.org has developed these technologies and consists of employees of PayPal and other companies. Right now, if the incoming email from PayPal is not authenticated by SPF or DKIM, the e-mail isn’t allowed to be delivered to the user. The same e-mail will be delivered when it comes to other e-mail providers and this is the nub of the problem, wider adoption!

“What we need is an Internet standard that allows this level of protection to work at scale – without any discussion, without any partner agreements,” Brett McDowel, Security Manager at Paypal and Chairman of DMARC.org said. “That is what DMARC does.”

Besides PayPal, other companies involved in DMARC are American Greetings, LinkedIn and Yahoo as well as privately held Agari, Cloudmark, eCert, Return Path and the Trusted Domain Project. The approach taken by the group has shown to be credible by IDC Security analyst Michael Versace.

If this standard gets widely adopted, then spam might just become a thing of the past and the Internet might just be that clean Utopia that we want it to be. But spammers and cyber criminals are sharp people too. We are sure they will also make advances in circumventing these technologies. This is why Internet companies and other institution need to work hand-in-hand to always stay one step above these criminals!

What are your thoughts on the current state of Internet spam? Do let us know.

Twitter has established itself as the poster child (social network) of Rebellion against Governments. The evil one’s anyway! When you look at the uprisings last year in Egypt and Libya, you will realize the role Twitter played. In India, Twitter was used to drive awareness about Jan Lokpal and Anna Hazare. It has established itself as the safest bastion of free-speech and anonymity. Twitter allows anonymous accounts as opposed to Facebook and Google+.

Everyone feels that even though these other social networks are getting carried away by this whole ‘real name’ thing, Twitter is the safe hideout for those who wish to remain anonymous on the Internet. Looks like this is going to change soon.Twitter has now announced via its blog that they have affected certain changes on its network which will allow it to remove certain sensitive tweets coming from a country if asked to do so by law. This is pretty shocking!

They are assuring us before we take umbrage to this, that they will try their best to not do it but sometimes their hands may be tied. Personally, we think this is the undoing many years of work Twitter has put into becoming what it has. This is their rationale: “The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact … almost every country in the world agrees that freedom of expression is a human right. Many countries also agree that freedom of expression carries with it responsibilities and has limits.”

As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content. Until now, the only way we could take account of those countries’ limits was to remove content globally. Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to re-actively withhold content from users in a specific country — while keeping it available in the rest of the world. We have also built in a way to communicate transparently to users when content is withheld, and why.

However, apologetic Twitter may sound over this announcement, we are not buying it. Let us come to terms over this first. They are enabling an infrastructure which will scour tweets and block them. Something, Kapil Sibal will be very happy about! We are sure requests will soon be sent by our Government at the drop of a hat to remove ‘objectionable’ tweets which Twitter will remove happily. What is the point of Twitter if this happens?

You know what happened to SOPA when it tried to violate our rights? It died. Does Twitter seriously not know where this path leads? The more you try to control something on the Internet the more things spin rapidly out of control like a viral disease. This is called the ‘Streisand Effect’. Twitter is popular only because of its 140 character limit, its real-time nature and the freedom of speech and expression it provides. Without it, Twitter would be dead and buried long time ago in the same place where all the other Social Networks like MySpace, Hi5 and Friendster are.
