Maharashtra Ranks Numero Uno For Online Shopping On Flipkart

Flipkart which recently received US$ 160 Million in funding from a new set of investors, has disclosed some insights about its sales chart in the country. According to the popular e-commerce portal, the state of Maharashtra secured the No.1 spot in terms of online shopping in India. Flipkart revealed that it has more than one crore registered users and sees over 10 lakh daily visitors. The online shopping portal is witnessing over 50 per cent of traffic from Tier I and Tier II cities.


According to the online sales chart, Flipkart stated that Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nagpur are the prime cities contributing to sales. In fact, Pune is the fourth largest city for in terms of sales in the country. It added that Thane, Kalyan and Solapur have grown 12 times over the last one year.

As expected all the online shoppers in Maharashtra are buying mobile, computer, storage, books and tablets. Pune is shopping footwear while Nagpur is going for computer accessories, fashion accessories and personal & hygiene products.

The average age of the shoppers in these cities range between 25 and 30 years, as per the user data. Flipkart’s  Senior V-P -Marketing, Ravi Vora attributed these shopping trends of Tier II cities to “Increasing internet literacy and the growing penetration of smartphones. He added that access to a plethora of brands and the increasing purchasing power of customers are contributing to the growth of the industry.

Flipkart further stated that in future mobile commerce will be an important trend which will  drive the adoption of online shopping by Tier I & II cities. The sales data shows that items like books and accessories are popular categories among those who access the website through their mobiles.

Ravi added, “The mobile commerce opportunity is pegged to reach Rs 1,200 crore by 2015 and is looking at this channel very seriously. Our typical mobile customer comes from tier I & II cities”.  Last month Flipkart rolled out a native Android app with features like offline mode browsing, voice search and barcode scanning.

The online retailer predicts that cities in Maharashtra will play a long and important role in terms of traffic generation.
