Google has finally updated Hangouts and introduced the much-desired status availability feature on the Google Hangouts app. Users have been missing this feature on the Hangouts app since Google replaced the Google Talk app on Android devices with the Google Hangouts app in May.
The update shows not only as to who is online, but also as to who is reachable on Hangouts. Green icons show that people are online while grey ones indicate they are not. Contacts are now organized by People you Hangout with, Suggested People and Other Contacts. The update also puts invites on top of your conversations so they are easier to find. The company also stuffed in a few new minor features into its cross-platform chat app, like the ability to pinch to zoom into photos. Also, the new version will now allow users to hide people from the New Hangout screen by pressing their name for a few seconds and touching ‘Hide contact.’
The update is rolling out to the Play Store now and should be available for most users over the next few days. We expect that Google will update the iOS and desktop versions of Hangouts with similar features in the near future. Google has however not updated Hangouts with SMS or Google Voice integration. In August this year, Google announced that it will be introducing high-definition 720p video chatting. All these updates will make the Google Talk or Hangouts quite powerful.
