Groupon has acquired Blink, a last minute Hotel Booking app. Though the exact quantum of funds exchanged has not been officially disclosed, Blink is expected to substantially augment Groupon’s travel business.
Christened Groupon Getaways, the travel related segment was launched in 2011 and has been working to expand its network. It presently claims to offer curated deals across 48 Countries. Though it works primarily with hotels, Groupon Getaways is also routinely adding other local attractions to make the travel related deals more lucrative and appealing to the online shopper. Blink will soon be rechristened to ‘Blink By Groupon’ and has its own set of innovative attractions. Interestingly, Blink is presently focused on the european region, but given the spread of its new owners, it could soon expand its niche offering to other countries.
Blink’s niche involves, allowing customers the freedom to hold their booking decisions until the last possible minute without heavily impacting their budget or disturbing their schedules. Such important attributes make it a valuable addition to Groupon that works hard to offer limited deals that have a very short shelf-life. Combining the power of the price-sensitive deals with the ability to offer hotel booking even at the last possible juncture, greatly enhances the appeal of Groupon.
Groupon has made a well thought decision by buying Blink, shared Aaron Cooper, Senior Vice President, Groupon Getaways, “The combination of a fantastic mobile app, same-day inventory management for properties and a team that is obsessed with mobile and last-minute travel will help us further expand our travel business as the go-to destination for great deals on great places to stay,”
The deals portal already has made some serious impact in the deals section with Groupon Local (location sensitive deals) and Groupon Goods for select deals on electronics, fashion, home furnishings. With Blink, Groupon can certainly gain the highly competitive online travel segment. What do you think?
