Nokia has garnered such numbers thanks to the popularity of its Asha series which has budget mobile handsets like Asha 201,205 , 501 and so on. The company also recently rolled out software upgrade for handsets like Asha 305, Asha 306 and dual-SIM enabled Asha 308 and Asha 310. Nokia gave some insights about the downloads in the Nokia Store saying that games, entertainment and utility-based apps were most popular. Action Games ranked n0.1 in the download category followed by Adventure games and Sport games. Entertainment related apps including video and movies are at number four while utility based apps took the no.5 spot.

Speaking about the downloads in Nokia Store, Sari Harju, Director- Mobile phones, Nokia India,

Apps, we believe, are core to this investment. They not only help us supplement our products with an innovative portfolio of solutions but also provide consumers with the choice to personalize their experience. This is a great feat for us and we will continue to work towards truly democratizing services and experience further”

Globally, the Nokia Store is available in over 200 countries and has achieved over 10 billion cumulative downloads. Over 148,000 content items are available for Series 40 devices and see an average of nearly 15 million downloads daily. While the numbers seem good for Nokia it has a long way before its reaches to the downloads achieved by Apple and Google. The Google Play Store hit 50 billion app downloads in July while Apple’s App store reached the same milestone in May.

Nokia India saw a 23% dip in revenue in 2012 as compared to the previous year. Will the launch of Lumia handsets and Asha series change this figure next year? What do you think?
