Meru Cabs Launches Mobile Apps For iOS And Android; Adds Emergency Alert Feature

Meru Cabs, one of India’s first standardized taxi booking company has announced the launch of its new mobile app. These features now get it on par with startups like Olacabs which adopted the mobile approach much earlier.

The app immediately picks up your current address based on your GPS/GPRS connection and directs their closest driver to your address. You can also manually edit the address to make it more specific. The app allows you to track your car before you can board it thus giving you an indication of how much time it will take to reach you. This is shown on a map and you also get an option to call your driver directly from the app. You can also check out the route in real time when you have begun your journey. It studies your past bookings and builds a Favorites list, so that you can book cabs for recurring places quickly. Besides having a neat e-receipt screen, it also gives you an option to give feedback about your ride.

It has the ability to send push notifications on your device dealing with the process of booking, an eg. would be about driver and car confirmation. Users can book both Meru and Meru Plus cabs using this app.

There is a feature called ICE Alerts which helps users send out emergency alerts to their trusted contacts. ICE stands for ‘In Case Of Emergency’. This feature is somewhat surprising because I don’t believe any cab company has done it before and also because it is somewhat cut off from the services the company provides and can be used without having to avail Meru services. That being said, I find it to be a good move. The fact that the app can serve a dual purpose of cab booking and sending out emergency alerts is definitely a good idea.

The app is currently live on the iOS App Store and Google Play. The company says that their Windows Phone app is coming soon.
