Online music streaming service Saavn will start rolling out video song streaming in India from middle of next year. Along with streaming videos, the company also plans to allow users to downloads Bollywood movies in next two years.
Vinodh Bhat, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Saavn, told Business Line.“There are around 60,000 of Bollywood movies since 1930s and we want them to available through digital formats. We will digitise all these movies and would make available to consumers by 2015-16″. The company plans to work out on all the licensing agreements with Bollywood production houses such as Yash Raj Films before digitising all the movies.
With a music catalouge of over 1 million songs across various genres like Bollywood, Devotional, Regional, English etc, Saavn claims to add new releases everyday. Saavn will increase its music offerings by adding more regional languages to current list of 11. The company will also double its headcount to 120 globally by next year.
In order to expand its user base in India and abroad Saavn has already partnered Tata Docomo, Shazam, Facebook, Google, HTC and Karbonn. Bhat also said that they are in talks with various Indian internet provider and mobile companies for partnerships. He added the mobile handset makers like Samsung, Micromax and others would come up with Saavn app in near future.
Giving insights about Saavn’s user base Bhat said that two third of its 11 million users are from India. The service has its largest users in the US followed by UK, Canada, the West Asia and Asia (including India). He added that although the feature phone market is still prevalent in India, the picture will change in couple of years as there would be 500 million Android phone users.
Last week Saavn rolled out Saavn Pro and Saavn Pro Lite for Android user after bringing the same service for iOS earlier in February. I believe adding video songs and allowing movie downloads will give Saavn an extra edge over other music streaming services like Gaana, Hungama and Dhingana.
