Its been a year since Marissa Mayer took the baton to save Yahoo from sinking. The former Google employee has revealed some interesting numbers for her company on her first anniversary as Yahoo CEO. “Yahoo’s future is mobile,” Mayer said during a webcast discussing Yahoo’s second quarter earnings. She touted the company now sees 340 million monthly mobile users.
With six times growth in the mobile workforce that was due to ‘tuck-in or talent acquisitions‘, Yahoo will continue to increase the team at a similar pace. Mayer further stated that the number of daily active users to Yahoo Mail on mobile has increased 120 percent since the launch of the tablet app. Moreover, daily users have increased 55 percent and time spent has increased 60 percent since the revamp of Yahoo app which is enhanced by Summly.
According to Mayer Yahoo’s traffic in terms of pageviews actually grew year-over-year which reflects recent growth offsetting earlier losses. Mayer pointed to mobile as one of four key areas for Yahoo’s future growth other being display, advertising and video. She said that Yahoo “will begin to clearly address” advertising and video in the second half of the year. Mayer said that Yahoo’s Tumblr acquisition presents opportunities across aforementioned all four areas. She is working with Tumblr’s David Karp to develop native ads, which she said “can be every bit as good as the content itself.”
In the last six months alone, Yahoo has redesigned its homepage and email app. It also introduced an Apple-acclaimed weather app, new ad formats and released a major overhaulof photo-sharing service Flickr. The company has also axed twelve applications and acquired over 13 startups.
