Tennis fanatics rejoice! YouTube will live stream the 2013 Wimbledon tennis tournament. The world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament which kick-starts from June 24, will be live-streamed on YouTube for the first time.
Users will be able to catch the key moments of the tennis, interviews, behind the scenes, exclusive live look-ins and press conferences throughout the tournament. Wimbledon’s channel will also showcase some of the best matches from tournament history when the inevitable rain interruptions curtail the action on centre court. Although the Wimbledon’s YouTube channel was launched way back in 2006, this is the first time it will officially live stream the entire tournament. As usual the YouTube coverage will all be free to access and is sure to help pass some office hours for avid tennis fans.
Live streaming of sports events does help video sites garner high user engagement. Some Indian streaming services like nexGtv, Boxtv etc have broadcasted popular sporting events. I feel these Indian players should also follow YouTube’s step and bring more sporting events on their platforms considering the rise in video consumption and internet users.
