WordPress Is Now 10 Years Old

WordPress, the open-source platform that today dominates the blogging and CMS marketworldwide has turned ten years old. The founders Matt Mullenweg and Mark Little had released the first public release of WordPress ten years ago today.

WordPress is a product of the Houston technology start-up scene. The project started as a form of the blogging platform b2/cafelog. In 2005, Mullenweg founded Automattic, the company that runs the WordPress.com hosting service and oversees work on the open-source version of WordPress. A decade after its creation, WordPress powers some of the highest-profile sites on the Web, including users like The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Forbes, Mashable, TechCrunch, GigaOM, AllThingsD and many, many more.

The Content Managament System capabilities of WordPress are commendable, and which has given rise to the fact that almost 18% of the websites on the World Wide Web use WordPress as their hosting and blogging platform. The many thousands of contributors writing code for WordPress and adding themes and plug-ins for its users compliment the popularity of WordPress rather effectively. Online publication is dead simple on WordPress and there’s no dearth of stuff you can do with the software.

Mullenweg had this to say on the anniversary,

“You were cute before you became beautiful. Wearing black and white, afraid of color, trying to be so unassuming…You showed the world you were growing up, and how much you cared about design and typography and other platonic ideals. You knew that open source didn’t have to be homely. I stretched myself too thin trying to get you there, and I did a stupid thing to pay for it. I hurt you, but instead of casting me away you held me closer, supported me, gave me another chance. ”

I think this milestone achieved presents great news for the whole of the internet community, especially WordPress’s founders and the talented team and contributors behind this software.

WordPress has setup a separate website to celebrate the completion of 10 years. Many WordPress users and developers are organizing meetups and celebratory parties on the occasion. You can check out all this information on the special website.
