The sixth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament has seen 52 % rise in its online viewership. As per the viewership numbers recorded for 38 matches, which is 50 per cent of the tournament, IPL online viewership across bothBoxtv.com and Youtube combined recorded a 52 % growth.The number of viewers increased to 75.2 million this year compared to 49.3 million Internet users that saw the series last year.
Praveen Sharma, head of media sales at Google India said, “Better streaming experience, increased mobile and tablet device access and growing awareness about the availability of IPL online is fueling the growth in viewership.” Combined viewership of match highlights and clips grew 480% in watch-hours compared to a year ago, said Times Internet Limited (TIL), the official digital partner of IPL, which is live streaming the matches on in partnership with YouTube.
Bangalore and Hyderabad lead the viewership with 14 percent each, with Delhi coming in a close second at 10 percent. The matches that registered the maximum online views were on April 23 between – Royal Challengers Bangalore versus Pune Warriors India and Mumbai Indian vs Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 25.
Satyan Gajwani, Times Internet CEO said in a statement,
“We have worked hard hard to make the online experience more social and interactive than ever before. We added a Match Tracker to should live data and information contextual to the video match experience. He further added that this year’s IPL is a far more social experience with Google + Hangouts integration which enables users watch IPL with their friends.”
