In a bid to increase their user base and thus get people to use the mobile Internet for cheaper prices, Opera Mobile has announced a partnership with 7 Indian OEMS who deal primarily in low and medium priced Android devices. The partnership will see Opera Mini being installed by default on Android phones by Celkon, Karbonn, Lava, Intex and selected devices by Fly and Zen. HCL ME tablets will also get Opera Mini pre-installed.
Opera Mini is a huge hit in the country primarily because of its data compression technology which makes surfing the mobile internet quite breeze in the infrastructurally challenged Indian Internet sector. The speeds are definitely increasing as the years pass but on a whole we still do have some issues with the kind of connection speeds the country has on an average. Opera Mini can achieve an ideal compression rate of 90% and its availability across various mobile platforms means that Indians can consume more content and surf better even on 2G data connections.
Opera recently released a report on The State of Android in India and the numbers are promising. The number of Indian users getting onto Opera Mini jumped by 136.6% and users from the Android camp increased by 62% thus accounting for 12% of the total Opera Mini user base.
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software released a statement about the development,
“The number of Indians accessing the web from mobile devices is growing at a much faster rate than those using a computer. This unique environment has made it essential for handset manufacturers to ensure their upcoming mobile devices are web enabled and are ready to deliver the best browsing experience. We are extremely pleased to work with these Indian mobile OEMs who have chosen Opera Mini for their devices based on Android, a very promising mobile OS for smartphones. A combination of affordable Android devices and smart applications such as Opera Mini will ensure that users enjoy a seamless browsing experience and encourage newbies to get on board the web express.”
With Opera Mini being pre-installed by the Indian Android OEMs, we will see a tangible rise in consumption and usage on the Internet. This will definitely in turn give rise to usage of news, information directories, social networking, communication and e-commerce.
