This feature works currently on GPS enabled buses only. The company says that this is the first time a commerce company has introduced this feature in the country. This feature is a small yet potentially tedious pain point for travelers in the city. Due to traffic, buses can be late on arrival and this can result in precious time lost. The feature is designed to make that problem go away.

Users can choose to book buses with GPS tracking and they will receive an SMS one hour before their journey time, which will give them the details of the bus’ location. Users can keep refreshing the link to be updated on the whereabouts of the bus. The functionality can also be accessed on mobile.

Harinder Thakar, CEO of  Paytm spoke about the new feature,

“In our endeavor to provide the best and most hassle free bus travel experience to our customers we always try to add value to our offerings. With the new GPS solution for bus tracking I am sure our consumers will find even more value in buying their bus tickets on Paytm.”

The bus operators that support the GPS tracking functionality are Morning Star Travels, Orange Tours & Travels, SVR Tours & Travels ,Navin Travels, Sree Travels and Kaveri Kamkshi Travels. All of these are South Indian bus operators. The service will be available in Hyderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, Bangalore, Tirupati, Vishakhapatnam, Mumbai, Pune, Nellore, Chennai, Erode, Salem, Madurai, Nagpur, Ongole, Coimbatore and Mysore and are planning to come to more Indian cities and travel points soon.

Although, GPS tracking for arrival time is a good approach, it could be expanded to full time journey tracking so that family members or designated people could also track the time taken for a person to reach them and just basically check on them.
