OLX India has announced what seems to be an internship program for Indian college students who would like to get some global work experience. The program is somewhat weirdly called ‘Best Sellers Program’. It means that aspiring students will have to ‘sell’ their abilities/principles and convince the OLX India guys that they are ready to join the program.
The campaign wants to target some 40 million students from 500+ colleges in the country over the next 3 and set them up to be OLX ambassadors. The people from OLX will be visiting engineering, management and graduate colleges in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore in the beginning and manually screen the students based on their interest as well as aptitude. The company has stated that they will be looking at selecting 75 ambassadors in the first year of the program and guide them on their way. The next phase would see these selected candidates organizing and taking part in on campus activities. Finally, based on the performance of all the students one ’best seller’ will be chosen for an internship at the international offices of OLX.
Although the program has been advertised as a way to give global exposure to talented students, it seems to be more about spreading the OLX brand into colleges. Since these OLX ambassadors will be conducting activities which involve the concept of hyperlocal sales through OLX’s platform, the company will get significant exposure among the youth.
Mr. Amarjit Batra, CEO at OLX.in spoke about the new program,
“The youth of today is the key decision maker and influencer in a lot of things. We are glad to initiate a unique college program which will help us to interact and engage with the torchbearers of the 21st century. The idea is to familiarize them with OLX.in and to encourage them to showcase their talent and grow professionally by providing them with all the guidance and tools they require. We plan to appoint 75 ambassadors in the 1st year and induct, train, engage and encourage them to be the Best Sellers of their college. We envision making it really big in the forthcoming years. Students can look forward to further developments in the Best Sellers Platform which will extend great opportunities for them.”
One good thing about the initiative is that it is open to all and requires you to be the best seller among the rest thus somewhat democratizing the internship process for global brands which normally happens only in select elite colleges. We hope these students use it to their advantage.
