Kai Po Che released recently and it collected Rs. 18.10 crore in opening weekend. The movie is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel 3 Mistakes Of My Life and was expected to perform good and as Bollywood and Marketing go hand in hand, movie producers and WeChat have entered into an agreement where WeChat would have accounts of the Kai Po Che cast and fans can get access to the app and related media like video, sounds, music and pictures. The app is light in terms of size. It is 2.8 Mb which is manageable with 3G connections in seconds. The problem is that the app requires too many permissions to be operable. The time taken to install is almost as long as clicking ‘yes‘ on various options and notifications for permissions but once the user successfully starts the app, it is a relatively smooth experience.
Flipping the screen leads to playing three different songs from the movie. The app lays emphasis on propagating the music, pictures and wallpapers of the movie and get users excited about the movie and the ones who have watched the movie can gain access to exclusive content. The songs featured can be set as ringtone or the displayed wallpaper that the user is currently viewing would be set as desktop wallpaper.
The app is intrusive. To keep the app fully free, a search monetization platform is installed by Startapp which installs a bunch of stuff at different places like a bookmark in the browser, a search icon on the home screen and it changes the browser search homepage. This would not agree with some people who are change averse and like their desktop customized according to their needs.
The app also features advertisements for other developed apps from the maker, which is a little distracting and unwarranted but understandable as once the user is done with setting the desired ringtone or wallpaper, it hardly matters.
In all, if you loved the movie, you would like the app. It is an average app which brings together content from the movie. The rating I would give based purely on the user interface, usability, intrusion and appeal is 2.5/5 – average. You can download the app here.
