Top Indian Corporate Businesses will soon get to flaunt a new custom domain extension. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the internet domain registration’s apex body is about to approve the extensions applied for, by these companies. Until now about 21 Indian companies including Tata Industries, State Bank of India, Bharati Airtel, RIL & others have applied for custom domain extensions by paying a hefty premium exceeding Rs. 1 Crores.
However, before we get to see websites like www.Gaddi.Tata or www.Savings.SBI, ICANN will first release a lot of generic domain extensions that do not directly correlate or reveal any corporate identity. These extensions indicate the line of business, services provided or category of the website. Known as generic Top Level Domains (gTLD), these domain extensions include .Music, .Search, .Shop etc.
ICANN had initiated the application process way back in January of last year. Despite the steep registration / application fee of US$ 1,85,000 (Rs 1.03 Crores) & annual renewal charges to the tune of US$ 25,000 (Rs. 13.9 Lakh) almost 2000 requisitions were made. Since the suffixes are basically an extension of the corporate identity, they come under the purview of copyright laws.
Hence, ICANN will first, closely examine the applications & will approve only legitimate claims. Given the gamble of such a magnitude, we do not think any cyber-squatter would risk over Rs. 1 Crore! Though RIL has applied for a .India domain extension which should democratically belong to the Government.
.com domains had always held a special appeal for companies who would first exhaust all possible name permutations to get a website ending with a .com extension before settling for something else. Despite the introduction of other extensions like .org, .net or even region specific ones like .in or .hk, companies scrambled to get their online identity a .com website. But as these gTLDs & custom extensions make a foray, will we see the trend fade or will we see the emergence of more confusing extensions making it difficult to remember our favorite websites?
