In the first half of January 2013, Plustxt graduated from the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure program. This program was set-up by Microsoft India to mentor and assist 11 Indian cloud startups, of which Plustxt was one.
Plustxt Mobile Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is a Bangalore based startup founded in 2012 by IIT Delhi alumnus Parag Arora, IIT Bombay pass-out Lokesh Chouhan and Pratyush Prasanna, an IIM Calcutta alumnus. The messaging solution app that is available on the Android and iOS platforms enables people to send and receive messages in 7 Indian languages – Kannada, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Punjabi and Gujarati.
Speaking on this unique offering of the app Pratyush Prasanna said, “Almost everyone talks in their mother tongue or a mishmash of languages and we address that segment. Now users can text in Hindi + English, Kannada + English – or any other mix of languages that they are comfortable with. Plustxt helps you communicate freely in your own language”
I tried the app and it delivers what it promises. The app requires you to sign-in using your Facebook account or you can create a different Plustxt account if you so wish. Then on, the app has a couple of user-friendly features. First on, the sender can decide to time the message in a way that it auto-deletes after 5 minutes. Futhermore, the sender can delete messages that have already been sent and perhaps read even by the recipient.
The ‘+Delete’ button will delete messages that have been sent using the ‘+Send’ button. The ones sent by clicking on ‘Send’ cannot be deleted. Another good feature of the app is that it does not have a 160 characters SMS limit, instead the limitation is of 1000 characters.
As you can see, Clara and I had an English-Hindi conversation rather effortlessly.
For now, this messaging app is free for use and is slated to be available on Blackberry, Java and Windows phones soon. I think this app will be a success because of the language flexibility it offers. Also, the fact that one will be able to send messages in Arabic, Bahasa and Thai soon will only help widen its customer base.
Are you keen on trying this app and using it regularly? Do tell.
