Zomato has made its first excursion into Europe by launching a London section on their popular website. The new section is invite only and is not accessible to the general public yet. Zomato has announced that the section will be accessible to everyone on 26th January, 2013. Zomato recently expanded its operations to the Middle East and Sri Lanka. The addition of London is huge new step for the company that has prided itself on helping foodies discover the best restaurants online and on mobile.
The London section of Zomato has listed around 14,000 restaurants in the Greater London area. Londoners will find that they can use it to discover eateries and restaurants whether it is to dine out, get food delivery and getting takeouts. The London section has the usual Zomato features like menus, photos, mapped coordinates in addition to something new called Dish Search. This new feature will allow Londoners to search for a dish across the section on Zomato London. London is a huge melting pot of culture, ethnicities, nationalities and food. This feature will make it easy for people in the city to discover unique dishes.
Zomato has been on the offensive since it raised 12.86 crores from Info Edge, the company behind Naukri and Jeevansathi. Info Edge has also picked up 48.5% stake in the company and their total investment in Zomato has been around 31.06 crores
Deepinder Goyal, Founder and CEO of Zomato spoke about the London section launch.
“London is a very mature market in terms of internet and smartphone penetration among users accessing local information. When it comes to local coverage on restaurants, we feel that there is a huge need of Zomato’s niche focus on providing rich and complete restaurant information (scanned menus, pictures, map coordinates, transit access, reviews and more). Our goal is to provide the foodies in London complete information about the restaurants around them before they make the choice to dine-out, get food delivered or order a takeaway. We are very excited to bring our product here and are expecting a great response from the bustling city of London!”
We still don’t know how the Zomato properties in the Middle East and Sri Lanka are doing in terms of adoption and usage and it might be too early to discuss it anyway. The London section seems to be an ambitious entry and if done well could be huge.
Update: Zomato’s Alexa details show that Zomato’s UAE ranking is 144 since the 5 months that they have been active. The UAE section gets 250,000 visitors every month and the Colombo section gets around 40,000 visitors a month.
