In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of Communications Kapil Sibal divulged some interesting facts about the state of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme launched in January last year. Sibal confirmed that Idea Cellular was the biggest gainer with a net customer base of 3.32 million customers as on March 31st. From this number 9,297,896 were due to MNP. The next beneficiary was Vodafone as it added 2.89 Million users from which 11,040,863 were purely from the MNP Pool.
Interestingly, a small number of customers did leave Idea (5,974,318) & Vodafone (81,50,730).
MNP, which allows easy migration to any other network within India for a measly fee of Rs. 19 has apparently become very successfully despite speculations. While large companies did add customers, it was the smaller firms that managed to add the most. India’s Mobile base has swollen to well beyond 900 Million. Under such circumstances, these numbers do not appear to make a huge impact, but clearly show that given a choice, people opt for a different service provider.
MNP, needless to say had faced some hurdles from the Telcos as they refused to part with their customers, sometimes stating ridiculous reasons. However, TRAI took notice & got cracking to prevent the companies from such stance. Against all odds MNP has not only managed to forge a place but has become a looming threat to carriers.
Have you opted for MNP lately? How was the experience?
