Yahoo has been going super-local lately. It is reported that Yahoo! India has partnered with Malayala Manorama to launch Malayalam.Yahoo.com. Malayalam speaking audience will not only be offered news from the spheres of politics, sports, business, entertainment, etc. but also the online edition will share its movies, music and weekend features too.
Yahoo aims to increase its user-base in India confirms Arun Tadanki, MD, Yahoo! India & South-East Asia, “Launch of Malayalam content on Yahoo! India is yet another milestone in the execution of our language strategy, aimed at growing the overall Internet user base in India” Manorama is by far the highest read Malayali daily & its premium content made available on Yahoo will surely drive regional traffic. Going regional is the flavor of the season because many publishers started offering just Marathi publications on their website. The World Wide Web too, has begun to offer customized web-domains that cater to non-English speaking people.
Its all good only if, people start flocking to such websites. One aspect that we cannot fathom is how searching for data will be affected? Majority of the search results are based on algorithms supporting the English language. Will we see an update in Search Engines’.
With Malayalam, Yahoo has supported 8 Indian Languages. Initially it was Hindi, which was later expanded to include Marathi, Bengali & Tamil, etc. Yahoo’s strategy to have premium dailies for its region specific sub-domain is a simple yet brilliant one.
With Tablets & large-screened smartphones making a foray into India, we may soon see people reading their newspapers online.
