Asia Takes Up Lion’s Share Of Mobile Market: GII

Earlier this year it was reported that according to data released by TRAI India’s mobile subscribers base reached upto 884.37Million. Recently, renowned Market Research Firm, Global Information Inc. has released a premium report on the Asian Mobile Market, along with their forecasts for the years 2012 to 2015. They have confirmed that Asia is one of the rising stars in the Mobile Market.

We already know that the Mobile Phone has revolutionized various sectors in India. Way more people can afford and own mobile phones compared to PC’s and Laptops. Hence, internet penetration in India has increased largely due to Mobile Phones. Mobile Commerce and offshoots of it too have been rising over the years.

According to the report, India and China have a vast majority in number of users in Asia. However, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam are also increasing rapid growth. However, some markets like Japan, Korea and Taiwan, where mobile penetration is already very high, are growing only at 5% and less year on year.

It has been estimated that by 2015, there will be 7 Billion mobile subscribers worldwide.

Out of these, 65% or 4.55 Billion will be from Asia. This is a mind-bogglingly huge number if you think of the amount of opportunities this presents. It also means that Mobile Phone Manufacturers and Service Providers will both be able to safely look forward to an ever increasing demand for their product for the foreseeable future.

However, all is not well. The Average Revenue per User or ARPU in Asian countries has never been very high, around USD5. The ARPU’s have been in a downward declining trend for the past few years and this is expected to continue. By 2105, it may hit as low as USD3.
