There are trends and then there are TRENDS. When the concept of social gaming first surfaced, many dismissed it as a fad. When the ‘fad’ persisted experts commented that this is just a trend and will soon be replaced by another. Now this ‘trend’ has become a part of millions of people’s daily online activity. A recent comScore survey reported that “3 out of every 4 minutes spent on a social networking site is on Facebook and every 7th online minute is spent on Facebook”. We know very well, from our own experiences and those of our friends and colleagues, that a large chunk of our Facebook time is dedicated to playing silly, addictive online social games.
So, Facebook’s ‘Top 10 Games of 2011’ is one list we would all like to know about.
Yesterday, Facebook released the list of the most popular games played on the social networking platform. Year-list’s have a tendency to be predictable as we all kind of figure out what to expect in them. This list throws up quite few surprises. To begin with, contrary to what most social media commentators expected, Zynga’s extremely popular social game ‘Cityville’ is not at the top. It comes in at the 3rd position. The top-spot goes to Playdom’s ‘Gardens of Time’.
Another extremely popular social game, EA’s The Sims Social is at the 2nd position. The Sims Social is a virtual reality game.
The interesting part of this list is that quite a few of the games are almost unknown entities. Since Facebook released the list a lot of chatter has been going on in the social world and it seems that they are all as flummoxed as me. Everyone expected ‘Cityville’ to be the number one game and most have not even heard of the eventual number one, Gardens of Time. The same goes for a ‘Bingo Blitz’ (7th on the list) or a ‘DoubleDown Casino’ (4th on the list). Facebook says that the list was derived from among games which had more than 100,000 monthly active subscribers and priority was given to games which had the highest ‘user satisfaction scores’.
Facebook’s Top 10 Games of 2011 are:
- Gardens of Time (Playdom)
- The Sims Social (EA)
- Cityville (Zynga)
- DoubleDown Casino (DoubleDown Interactive)
- IndianaJones Adventure World (Zynga)
- Words With Friends (Zynga)
- Bingo Blitz (BuffaloStudios)
- Empires & Allies (Zynga)
- Slotomania – Slot Machines (Playtika)
- Diamond Dash (Wooga)
Facebook also released a few ‘by category’ lists. Among them is Top Casino Games of 2011. In this list Zynga Poker is at the top, followed by Slotomania – Slot Machines and DoubleDown Casino. This makes Facebook’s Top 10 Games list more confusing. If the number one Casino Game of 2011 is Zynga Poker and ahead of Slotomania and DoubleDown Casino, then why does it not feature in the Top 10 list, whereas the other two games do?
An independent metrics firm Appdata has also released a list of Top 10 Games on Facebook in 2011 and that reflects what most people expected. ‘Gardens of Time’ does not even feature in the top 10 on this list. TechCrunch have said that Facebook’s list is a “snub” to Zynga and others believe that Facebook is simple trying to promote its recommendation tool. Either way we have to accept that there is never a dull moment at Facebook.
