Updated: Reliance Entertainment’s BigAdda.com Shuts Down Social Networking Site – To Focus On ECommerce

You are reading it here first: So finally some sense is being knocked into the Indian Social Networking players. While ibibo continues to spend money on TV ads trying to lure the users for social games. Bigadda.com which is a reliance funded social networking site has called it quits with social networking atleast. They will be focusing on ecommerce in their new daily deals avatar.

This is the email Bigadda.com has sent its users:

Dear Rajiv,

We value and appreciate your long standing support for Bigadda.com. In the past few months we explored our potential as an ecommerce portal by providing branded products at profitable deals to you and have found immense success. We are reaching newer heights everyday and hence are planning an expansion in the same arena.

We request you to download all your personal collection of blogs, audio files, video files and images from Bigadda.com as we are scaling down our Social Networking services.

Please note that all your old personal data, uploaded on Bigadda.com, shall not be available after July 15 2011.

As you can see from above they are clearly asking users to download their personal stuff from the website before it shuts shop on July 15th.

The BigAnda?

Insiders from Reliance told us that Bigadda was anyways considered BigAnda (Big zero) internally and was usually compared to Zapak the gaming portal in number of users. The path for BigAdda has been one filled with struggle as far as social networking was concerned. It launched with huge mainline ad spends in TV advertising.. As you can see last 2 years Bigadda has not had much to talk about. It did try doing some online reality shows but again wasn’t able to scale the same. The recent resurgence of ecommerce startups which follow to Groupon model has led to Bigadda reinventing itself by leaving the social networking mantle and holding the ecommerce one. Its refocus seems to have come a little too late as this space too is very crowded with likes of Infibeam, Ebay, Snapdeal, Flipkart, Mydala and offlate Groupon too entering the Indian arena.

What about Big B?

One wonders what would happen to BigB’s blog where he continues to blog away? No announcement yet on this front. All we can see though that the homepage of BigAdda doesn’t even mention or link to the blog anymore.

Update: BigB shall continue blogging is the update from Reliance ADAG.

Hopefully Bigadda can change its reputation from BigAnda this time around.
