eBay India has just announced its move to mCommerce. m.ebay.in will connect users anytime, anywhere to eBay’s huge collection of deals and products. eBay India Mobile Web has been designed in a way that it can be accessed by any feature phone (GPRS / EDGE / 3G enabled) over the mobile web. The company believes that its mobile web version will redefine shopping and make it personal, convenient, fast and safe.
eBay also announced a message based solution that will enable users to find out what deals are available. Users need to text: eBay <product> to 567678 and they will get the 2 best deals on eBay India for the product they enter. If you’re not satisfied with the first 2, you can continue to check out the next 2 by sending ‘enext’ to the same number.
Through the mCommerce site, eBay shoppers will have access to over 400,000 deals on eBay India. At the launch Mr. Muralikrishnan B, Director – Marketing and Product, eBay India said that the company was well positioned to introduce shoppers to the ‘wave of mCommerce’. He also highlighted that since feature phones are more common in India, it has been designed in way that it can be accessed on any GPRS enabled device. Given that last year’s eBay India census indicated growing participation from smaller towns and cities, it is great that ebay decided to dip their toes into the mCommerce space in India with a website instead of an app for Android, iOS, Blackberry etc. According to eBay, the site supports secure payments using either credit or debit cards. You will have to generate a One Time Password in keeping with RBI guidelines though. The process varies from bank to bank, but the ‘help’ should get you through.
