Nokia Looking For A ‘Smart’ Revival

It is a known fact that Nokia is in troubled waters and trying hard to come out of the ditch it has dug for itself. Few years ago, Nokia was way at the top, but things changed after the introduction of the smartphone. Not to be bogged down, Nokia introduced a variety of smartphones, but lost out to the bigwigs like iPhone and Android.  It didn’t predict the trend of the market and has been lagging ever since. We had reported that the bottom line of Nokia’s balance sheet had suffered due to this immense competition.

To put up a hopeful public face, Nokia will unveil its new line of revamped smartphones next week at its annual media and industry event at London. Primary on its agenda will be to show the world the first Symbian 3 equipped smartphone, the Nokia N8. You can expect a lot of talk from Nokia about the future and how its phones are capable of being the next generation smartphones. Also in its kitty would be a talk to pacify its investors and reinforce their belief in the company.

Talking about the new phones, Nokia is all set to launch the E7 featuring a touchscreen display and a QWERTY slide out keyboard. Touch screen business phones gained popularity after the iPhone. Nokia’s E series, its range of business phones were quite popular in the recent past.

The much hyped about N8 will also be launched and shipped out by the end of the month. It boasts of a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optic, 16 GB internal memory, HD 720p resolution, face recognition, and is complemented by the Symbian 3 OS. The specs are impressive and it is touted to be available in India for around Rs. 22k. The flagship OS by Nokia has received a lot of flak for being outdated and a bad user interface. Nokia promised to revamp it and make it optimized for touch phones. The leaked images of the Symbian 3 look good, though it remains to see how it will finally work. One of the hurdles that Symbian has yet to overcome is the app store, which the iPhone has capitalized. With the Symbian 3, there is no room for error as it will ring a death bell for Nokia with regard to smartphones if it screws this up.

The road to recovery for Nokia is touted to start next week. You can count on Nokia bringing out phones at competitive prices. But will Nokia be successful in selling its smartphones? You may say better late than never. But with Windows bringing out its new Windows Phone 7, manufacturers like Asus, Dell, HTC and LG can’t wait to show off their new Windows powered phones. Add to that the immense success of Android phones and also the iPhone. We’ll have to wait for the launch and capture the reaction of the market before really knowing what the path ahead for Nokia will be. We’ll keep you posted about the latest happenings on this front. Do you think the N8 and E7 will be the life savers for Nokia?
