Who doesn’t love to take a break from work or college and fly away to a far off location, or maybe drive to a nearby hill resort for a couple of days? And in today’s world, most of us tend to let all our friends know about our travel plans through social networking sites, mostly to make the less fortunate jealous. However, do not be surprised if you come back home one day to find your abode ransacked.
Travelocity’s recently concluded poll revealed that more than half of the travelers like to share their vacation plans on social media sites. Would you really want people to know where you are going to be for the next ‘n’ number of days? You could might as well put up a board on your front door saying “No one at home. Feel free to take anything you want”. Social networking sites have started taking precautions against protecting its users like launching the panic button which would protect teenagers from cyber abuse. However, in the end, is it not our responsibility to ensure the safety of our home or our loved ones who are left back at home? Unfortunately, 30% of travelers never bother about taking precautions on posting about vacation plans on social network.

Here are some tips:
- Be very selective about what you or your family members are posting on social media sites. According to the poll, only 45% families made sure that no one posted about vacations.
- You definitely want to turn off the ‘add location to your tweets’ function if planning to tweet while on vacation. You most definitely do not want all your followers to know your whereabouts.
- Deactivating Foursquare is another must-do as it updates Facebook and Twitter when you log in.
Enjoy your vacation, and once you are back, you can go crazy on any social networking website you want. Post your photos on Facebook, tweet about how amazing your vacation was. After all, it is all about making others envious, isn’t it?
