@earlybird : Twitter’s Newest Advertising Messenger

Twitter finally deep roots its way into social media advertising.
A few days ago  Twitter created a special account : @earlybird that will deliver information on exclusive and time bound deals of several types of products to its users.

Here’s how the model works : if you follow the @earlybird account, you will get tweets about exclusive deals from Twitter’s (as yet unnamed) advertising partners. You can also retweet, follow and unfollow the account to your heart’s delight. In other words, from a consumer perspective, it works just like any other Twitter account. Companies would pay Twitter to have their products promoted and could cut a special deal for customers coming  from the microblogging service.

The multiplicity factor is huge : An @earlybird tweet seen by one million followers could be  retweeted by just one percent and be seen by an additional 10,000 Twitter users. With 190 million worldwide visitors, Twitter’s audience is certainly large enough, and this platform lucrative enough to the likes of huge number of companies.

The deals could be on products, like iPods or diapers, or on events, like concert tickets or travel. In a post on the company blog, Twitter indicated that  it could  filter deals by category, like apparel or gadgets, in the future. Twitter emphasized that it would be selective about which deals were offered and “try and make these deals interesting and of value to you.”

The company  will  start with  nationwide offers in the U.S., and then  possibly extend them down by site’s geolocation feature to a specific location. Twitter  hinted  that  if  the  project is successful, it  might go for fashion or music-focused EarlyBird accounts.  While an account like @cheaptweet  aggregates  deals from all over the Web, @earlybird deals are exclusive only to Twitter users; it also plans to actively solicit ideas for deals from the community.

The  earlybird  account  already has about 15,000 followers  despite not  featuring any deals yet. Lets see if @earlybird indeed successful in laying golden eggs for the site.
