Asia Tops Twitter World – India 4th Among Asian Countries

A recent study by Semiocast, a micro-messaging company in France, reveals that Asia has outshined North America as the biggest user of Twitter. They contribute about 37% of the total tweets in the micro-blogging site. Major contributors of this feat are Japan, Indonesia and South Korea. It was also found that USA, though being the first twitter nation, contributed just about 25% of the total tweets. This is 5% lower than what it was in March 2010.

Check the graph below

Though the US is going at the right pace, Asian countries are quickly picking up. The continent wise share of tweets now goes this way: Asia- 37%, North America- 31%, South America- 15%, Europe- 14%, Africa- 1.5% and Oceania- 1.5%. If we see the Asian region, Japan leads the trend, followed by Indonesia and South Korea. India is at fourth place with less than 1% of the total tweets on Twitter.

Though India contributes less in terms of the quantity of tweets (india contributes less that 1% of total tweets), the social networking site is now immensely popular in India. Also India ranks 4th among all the Asian countries on twitter. One of the main factors for this is it’s easy to use features. Apart from this, many people write bad English that bars them from having a blog. So there only hope is Twitter. Nowadays, the media is also doing round of it and delving deeper about what, how and why of it. Last, but not the least, the availability of social media friendly mobile phones also contributes to a certain extent. So, it becomes quite natural for it to be picked up by many people in India.

Bollywood celebrities are on a craze for tweeting their updates on Twitter. While they can keep in touch with their fans, they also can promote their new releases on it. For example, the chance of a person watching a new release of Amitabh Bachchan is higher if the actor sends him a personal tweet about it, as a reply to one of his tweets. People from other walks of life are also joining the bandwagon thereby strengthening the position of India in the ranking. No doubt, Twitter is  fast getting as popular as Facebook in India today. Are you there yet?
