Social Networking sites, Facebook and Twitter have found their way to the Delhi Police. No, not for any malfunction case, but for nabbing offenders of traffic!

In an effort to manage the traffic situation in the city during the Commonwealth games slated for October, The Delhi Traffic Police has come up with their pages on these popular sites in a bid to request the citizens to show their cooperation in doing their job. The only tool that you require to don your cop hat is just your cell phone camera! The offenders pictures- be it unregistered vehicle numbers, tinted glasses, riders without safety helmets, are posted on the site by the users and the case is registered with the DTP. Users post queries, complaints and suggestions and receive immediate responses from the DTP.

One month on and the Facebook page has over 9000 fans where dozens of photos and videos are uploaded everyday. Twitter has over 850 followers. With so many “assistants” roaming around the city, offenders should not be surprised to get a notice for a violation committed when they thought no traffic cop was around.

“It’s a big success. We get a lot of suggestions, complaints and comments. “Delhi Traffic Police has taken the first step and we will definitely reciprocate. I hope other departments and various public agencies also launch similar initiatives,” Ajay Chadha, special commissioner of police (Traffic), told IANS.

The cops regularly post important information and appreciation of the user’s effort on the wall. So, the next time, you jump a red light or park in a No parking zone and have got away from the cops or the surveillance cameras, don’t have a reason to cheer.. Some other alert citizen ‘cop’ might have caught your offence!
