The mobile seems to be becoming the remote control of life. Right from talking, photos, videos, chat, internet, video streaming to now even recording TV shows remotely! Yes you read it right! Airtel which launched its DTH services some time back has now launched an enhanced version of the Set top box which allows digital video recording of shows.
The more interesting part of this launch is the fact that it also launches with it a mobile application which airtel customers can download and log on to for recording TV shows on the go. So even if I am at office and I want to record the IPL 3 matches which are happening at home I can do so by logging into this app and recording the match!
Airtel digital TV Recorder include:
- 100 hours of recording storage
- Search for any television show up to 7 days in advance using the remote
- Search for any television show for 2 days on mobile
- Facility to pause live television programme for upto 45 minutes
How to download this application?
Registered Airtel Customers need to send an SMS with ‘mguide’ to 54325 and download the mobile recording application. Using their customer ID and password, they can log on and record shows from any Java and GPRS enabled mobile handset.
Ive been a believer that the cross section of mobile and tv will help drive app adoption on mobile. This service is quite utilitarian in nature and hence I expect more and more users to attempt to use this service. The grey areas though would be on the aspect of whether my tv needs to be on while Im away for the recording to take place. I believe this might be a deterrent for frequent usage of this application.

Why should the TV be on to record?
