IPL Youtube Statistics – 11 million Views – 40K+ Subscribers

We had blogged about the IPL – Youtube partnership and how it had the potential to change how online video and advertising on online video would be percieved in India. We also blogged about the big advertisers and the big amounts that Youtube roped in for this years online streaming of the IPL.

It seems to be working very well for the 5 year old video sharing site which is now looking at striking it big in India with the IPL. As per an interview in the ET Youtube has struck gold with the IPL.

The current statistics in not even 12 days of the IPL speak for themselves:

Channel Views:
18,279,661

Total Upload Views:
10,634,683

Subscribers:
56,747

The above statistics show that channel views are more than upload views which is the effect that the live streaming is having. Almost double the number of views for live streaming than archived uploaded clips. This is a sure shot thumbs up to live streaming of events online that have mass audience interest!

The Total Views as far as the SPONSOR’s ADS go is just 663,704 views and this is not UNQIUE. Its SUM of all the 19 matches so far.

ABOVE are the only VIEWS where SPONSORS VIDEO ADS are VISIBLE between OVERS.

If the same trend as first 19 matches contineus, total views would hardly cross 2 Million for ALL 60matches total.
ONE sponsor PER MATCH. 4-7 SPONSORS paid avg 2.5 crore each.
Means divide the 2 Million by 4 (minimum)= 500,000 VIEWS PER SPONSOR.
Not sure how many viewers would see ALL 40 OVERS LIVE when they can watch on TV. ASSUME THEY ALL DO.
So Ad Impressions = 500000 x 40 Video Ads per match = 20 Million impressions PER SPONSOR.

    Do the math.
cost /views x 1000 gives you CPM paid of RS 1250
cost per 1000 UNIQUE VIEWS assuming 500,000 are unique = Rs 50,000

You forgot to mention the continuing woes that YouTube’s IPL broadcast is having. Did not expect so may unresolved problems with streaming even after so many days. Google and YT need to do better.

While i agree they need to do better. ANy new initiative of the scale of this one is bound to have hiccups.

Live broadacasting has been going on for years for Football leagues. Many P2P softwares successfully do it without any hiccups whatsoever.

When youtube advertized so heavily that it will do a deferred broadcast of IPL, much was expected of it. But more often than not, I have seen the error “We are experiencing technical difficulty” pop up on the screen. Its like the good old DD days when we used to see the board “Rukawat ke liye Khed Hai”…. Certainly a Google Company needs to do much better than this, when they got so many sponsors and are making good moolahs.

    @ Imhotep

The statistics you showed are for archived match upload views.
Add to that live stream views, which is almost twice that. Still not very impressive, but probably OK.

    @Sree

The live stream views on average are just 300 odd and these are INCLUDED in the archived views. Yes..just 300 odd.
Do a simple test: Every morning around 9AM go to youtube.com/IPL and check the views for the previous night’s match…its just on avg 300 odd! Shocking but makes sense: Why will anyone want to see it live on bad bandwidth when its shown in TV? Sadly, US views (who really WANTED to see it on you tube) are NOT able to see it due to some legal reasons between youtube and willowtv etc.

@Sree… if you are still skepical, do another test and watch a match LIVE on youtube and check the views during the match.

Next be honest with yourself and try to find out how many ppl would ACTUALLY watch the whole 40 overs? They would turn off after 2-3 overs amx as the match is already “Deferred” 5 min..and great action happening on tv.

Am an internet media supporter myself, so am happy advertisers are paying 20000+ ecpms. BUT, I don’t like Google telling FALSE stats about “channel” views which include HIGHLIGHTS and OLDER clips as benchmark for what SPONSORS paid. Got it? its a huge false claim. SPNSORS dont get ANY benefit of the “total channel” views! NO SPONSOR ad for highlights or 2008 clips etc.

IPL live streaming is a flopshow on youtube. You might want to speak to some of the advertisers who’ve invested crores of rupees and are not even willing to dig further to check the delivery, since they are in danger of losing their job if they do so.

Lets agree and use some brain here. IPL is a freakin TV event. Who the hell is going to get onto internet to view live streaming, when they have the option of watching it in their 40 inch LCD sipping beer?

Youtube raked in a lotta moolah and thats not because of their sales capability [ they couldn't break even, by the way]. Its purely because of the low IQ of media buyers in digital agencies, who simply got carried away and as usual based their decision on loads of assumptions.

Whats with the Magnitude that you are talking about? . There are loads of sites who are handling similar or more traffic when it comes to Live streaming. The pakistan based crictime tackles live streaming better than youtube.

We”ll definitely appreciate if something turns out good. But try and develop the capability of calling a spade a spade, even if they are google or yahoo. Offlate , you seem to be praising both of them , way too much :D
