In another example of Google’s ever-increasing efforts to expand to all vistas of technology, reports are coming in that Google TV may well be on its way. A collaboration between Google, IBM and Sony, the move is seen as Google and IBM’s effort to extend their dominance in the Television industry. It is also expected to give a boost to Sony’s flagging fortunes in the Television market. According to the report in NY Times, the three companies have tapped Logitech, which specializes in remote controls and computer speakers, for peripheral devices, including a remote with a tiny keyboard.
Expected to be in the form of both a set-top box and actual TV sets, Google TV will be based on the Android OS and is expected to use Chrome Web Browser . Google intends to open its TV platform, which is based on its Android operating system for smartphones, to software developers. In short, it wants to bring web apps, services (like Twitter) and Google search to the TV screen. People in the know-how have told NYT that the project has been going on for some months now, though the official spokesperson for each of the companies denied any knowledge. NYT also reports that Google has already begun testing a limited version of Google TV in collaboration with Dish Networks, one of its partners in the TV Ads program.
Google’s new initiative comes as no surprise. With the huge amounts of money for advertising up for grabs in the Television industry, it was only a matter of time before Google plunged in. But the going is not expected to be smooth. As it is, there are already a number of devices available in the market which perform similar functions. Service like Roku has been around for some time now. Even Apple had launched Apple TV, though it was a failure. Google can take hope from the fact that none of these services have been successful enough to be christened a market leader. In such a scenario, if the Google TV comes up with some new and innovative features, it may just capture the market and establish itself as the leader.
