IPL fever is creating ripples for various digital media businesses to flourish with its scattered deals in place. In a demonstrate IPL earlier allocated first of its kind Online streaming rights for any sporting event in India to youtube and as anticipated did the same for mobile streaming rights. Apalya has managed to acquire live mobile streaming rights for complete three years from GCV (Internet-Mobile Licensing partner for IPL).

Apalya Technologies through its partnership will be able to broadcast live streaming feeds of IPL matches onto mobile platform. It is to be noted that July systems also bagged mobile video rights for IPL but that was just for mobile clips simulating real-time access to video feeds. Apalya at the same time will be global live mobile streaming provider for IPL seasons.

Apalay already serves many telecom operators and is therefore facing no difficulty in bringing new service agreements in place. It is looking at  forging tie-ups with likes of RCom,Tata Tele to broadcast live streaming onto mobile data cards. Apalaya is aiming at doubling  its subscriber count to 2 Million Subscribers from current 1 Million through its IPL streaming rights.

Apalaya, last year raised $3 Million in funding and has ever since trying to expand into international markets. It earlier tied-up with Star plus to broadcast some of its news and GEC channel on to mobile handsets and UTV networks for its music video channel.  Apalaya also  tied-up with Tata Tele to expand its offering onto wireless internet – Photon TV. It is also making major head-way into 3G rollouts by partnering with various telecom players – majority aspirants for 3G licenses.

Mobile live streaming is lot tough segment than online streaming and as such will have to wait longer to garner reasonable amount of subscribers in India.  The rollout of 3G services will be the only driver for such services to grow phenomenally. Monetizing mobile video services is also a greater challenge and we believe this deal was cracked on a revenue sharing basis similar to youtube deal. IPL board is making smart move by allocating such digital rights for shorter period so as to allow these businesses to attain a monetizable size.
