IPL The Buzzword In Social Media, KKR Leads The Pack Once Again

IPL is the new buzzword among the social media enthusiasts. We all knew that to be true. Now, we have proof of the same. According to a recent report by The Nielsen Company, IPL is one of the hottest topics around. Interestingly, the buzz surrounding IPL is twice as much this year, as last year. This is a clear indication of the fact that more and more Indians are accepting social media like Twitter as  a way of life. The company used Online BuzzMetrics to determine the buzz around various topics related to IPL. Blogs were the most favored media of discussion, followed by message boards and Twitter.

The slot for the most discussed team went to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This follows the top slot that it had achieved last year too. Considering that they finished 8th last year, it was only SRK’s business acumen and marketing strategy that had helped them achieve the top spot last year. In fact, KKR was among one of the top trending topics in Twitter, the world over, during their first match this IPL season on 12th March.

Among players, Ricky Ponting was the most discussed player last year, followed by a distant Sachin. This year, though, its a neck to neck fight between the two with Ponting still leading the pack. The third spot went to the Indian skipper, MS Dhoni, last year, as well as in 2010.

According to Karthik Nagarajan, Associate Director – Nielsen Online, The Nielsen Company, “It might be surprising that Ricky Ponting is the most discussed IPL player online, this is because cricket fans either love or hate Punter, but seldom ignore him. Also, message boards are very active in Australia and Ponting is the most widely discussed player there.”

Fake IPL Player, who raised a storm with his detailed revelation of KKR team meetings also finds a feature in the report. His name was the 5th most discussed name in relation to KKR. With twitter catching on this year, there is immense scope for his growth this time. Considering that he is also coming out with a book called “The Gamechangers“, he will want the maximum social buzz that he can generate.

IPL has always been among the favorites of the internet media. Twitter’s growth and acceptance in the society will give a real fillip to IPL. As it is, some of the teams have already entered the Twitter arena with official accounts. The most active among them are Kolkata Knight Riders and Deccan Chargers. With IPL entering youtube as well, it is going to be an IPL frenzy on the internet for the next 40 odd days.
