It seems the cricket fever has gripped the country like never before and guess what it has also had its effects on the online space. Comscore Media metrics the digital media measurement company has announced some statistics for sports websites in India which has seen a huge jump in visitors in January 2010.
Here are some numbers:
In January 2010, 10.3 million Internet users age 15 and older visited a sports site in India from a home or work location, an increase of 97 percent from the previous year.
Check chart below of most visited sports websites:
As you can see cricket sites i.e. Yahoo cricket, ESPN (i.e. Cricinfo), Cricket Nirvana show the maximum increase in traffic.
Even the time spent by users on these sites have increased. Check below:
All in all the above does show two things: 1st is the obvious – India is crazy about cricket! but 2nd is that they are now consuming cricket online more and more.
This will be good news both for the IPL teams and the BCCI as well as youtube which has tied up for a 2 year exclusive deal with the IPL. It will be interesting to see what kind of statistics does youtube come out with post IPL and its impact on youtube visitors.

Yahoo cricket ahead of ESPN is really a joke…..even folks in yahoo will not believe this…….also, where is cricinfo….
