Moneycontrol Launches My TV – Now Watch CNBC-TV18 Live Streaming Online

Network18  group run financial portal Moneycontrol.com has taken a step further in providing financial analysis to its users. Moneycontrol has partnered with sister concern CNBC-TV18 to launch Moneycontrol My TV which basically shall bring the TV shows online via on demand live streaming.

The new initiative can be accessed on moneycontrol.com/tv. I tested out the platform with the channel running side by side and found that there was a delay of 2 seconds in the online version vis a vis the TV version.

That is very impressive if you ask me. I was using a Reliance Wimax 512 broadband lan connection when I tested this. There was no buffer in the video so it was completely smooth streaming. Im not sure how the streaming would work on other slower connections. But on my connection it was impressive.

Share brokers and retail investors in offices will like this. Most brokers are online during the stock market hours and Ive seen Cnbc Tv18 running on most TV’s in their offices (My father is into stocks so have visited a few bombay stock broker offices). This new product would surely give them an option to track the channel online. Besides the live tv Moneycontrol has also added a stock ticker, tracker and archived videos that users can check out as well.

The technology behind the live streaming is powered with help from partner Cisco Systems.

On Monetization
Currently there are no pre roll ads. But the actual ads from the TV are streamed on this live feed as well. Wonder if CNBC will charge advertisers separately after this platform kicks on for the digital ad streaming or will it be packaged as a free add on?

It’s a good move by them, considering media companies moving towards live streaming. But Some quick point which I noticed

    1. There is no option to watch full screen video

    2. Once you maximize the the video screens the buttons look very ugly

    3. Video delay is around 5 sec (I don’t think it will make that much difference)

    4. There is no option to see program schedule like the one on ET Now live TV website

It is going to be extremely useful for stock investors. Though I feel they are already flooded with so much information.

Advertisers will be able to reach the online audience this way and at the same time use the traditional media ads. It is interesting lets hope they keep this bit clutter free.
