Alibaba’s Content Specific Portal for Indians

Few months ago, TradeIndia has launched a separate Chinese section for Indian suppliers to bridge the gap between Indian and Chinese SMEs. Now, Alibaba has announced to launch a customized content portal for Indian suppliers, buyers and traders.

Currently, Alibaba has one million Indian users and to serve those users, Alibaba is developing a new content portal.

Portal Highlights
• Caters the local needs and culture
• Indian Alibaba users will get mailers on director market material and other mailers customized for India
• Payment gateway will also integrate.

Alibaba is still struggling for its survival in Indian SME market. They are doing JVs and investing huge amount on product development. This new content portal will also be a part of its development process. Portal will be launched in March 2010.

IndiaMART has also launched a mega content sourcing portal , which I won’t feel would add value to its business.

Need to see, how far Alibaba content portal will go.

Its my view that it is a complete waste of Time and Energy!! If content was the driver, then why don’t we have niche portals which are very successful in India? Just for the sake of utilizing people hired in all three firms, they push such projects. Again, the view is personal!

Also it would be great if you can share some details of Alibaba operating in India and the reasons they are struggling over here.

This was definitely a wise decision on the part of Alibaba in India, They have reccently launched similar projects in the UK and around Europe.
