Are Indian IT Companies Failing in Social Media & New Web?
Social Media has now become a de facto platform for launching new products and services. Social Media makes feedback for your products and services happen in a more lively manner. If you are quite active on Facebook or hob-nob with Twitter you must have stumbled upon Facebook pages and twitter profiles of various US based IT organisations and their employees a number of times… but I am sure you must not have seen much of an activity on these social media avenues from Indian IT Companies.
We have already told you about the sorry state of twitter activity & usage trend of famous Indian journalists. Here are a few facts from a post on the Nasscom Blog which really don’t show good signs about the social media usage of IT groups in India.
- Most of the senior managers of these IT companies never use their fancy blackberries and email technology which they supposedly build for, to their full extent. They end up with reading printed emails most of the time.
- Even the biggest of IT houses in India hardly have any substantial presence in the blogosphere. Infosys – India’s biggest IT House has a blog in which the most popular post has just 7 comments and 5 tweets.
- Twitter & Facebook are again not used to the fullest by many of these big Indian IT Companies. You have the Twitter Page & the Facebook Page of TCS for an example. An organisation as big as TCS has only about 900 fans (during the time this post was being drafted) of it’s Facebook Page which is kind of strange.
- LinkedIn recently opened office in India, a major reason for which is the large number of Indian users on LinkedIn. But there is no single job posting from the major Indian IT companies in LinkedIn.
So what may be the reason for this negligence that has lead to these big IT houses in India not taking to using Facebook and Twitter to their fullest. The world is slowly evolving to social media and technology is moving at a rapid speed. In the offices of many Indian IT co.s social network websites such as Facebook and Twitter are banned in order to increase productivity at work. This hampers Social Media usage at the first place. Well whether these organisations allow usage of social media at the workplace or not is totally their own policy but they should think about an alternative way to encourage social media use which would only result in growth… in a sense.
It will be really good to see top IT houses in India adapting Social Media as in integral part of their daily business. What do you feel? If you have an opinion, voice them in the comments section below.

We at Wipro regularly hire good mid-level talent on linkedin. So not sure what you mean when you say “no single job posting from the major Indian IT companies”.

Hey Parineeta! Its nice to see that Wipro is using the LinkedIn power to hire talent. But we were talking about the IT co.s in general and their absence from social media.
Thank You
Many people thinks that it useless to use Facebook and Twitter (+ more). But it is a epic fail!
There could be several reasons for not joining the official Facebook page. What I do on Facebook is a personal affair, even though I would not discuss work or organisation related topics, I would not like my colleagues to see all of it.
The other reason is that most of the Indian IT companies have restriced net access. You can’t surf Facebook or twitter from work. There are barely many hours outside work where you would like to come online.
Is it possible for FB to provide customized service to Corporates ?
e.g. corporates with limited access to outside world.
There are a few players like IBM, etc who providing web 2.0 solution.
But I was wondering if the feeling of being online over a social network will also help IT companies in their efforts around web 2.0 initiatives.
