We have earlier told you about Youtube’s plans to launch movie rental service. According to a news report, the online video major – YouTube is in discussions with big-media studios, new-media startups, individual filmmakers and major Hollywood studios about providing movies and content for it’s online rental service that debuted on Friday.

The online rentals from Youtube currently offers movies from the Sundance Film Festival for 24-hour to 48-hours for $3.99. Anyone with a Google Checkout account will be able to rent these films. As with other movie rental services – Netflix and Amazon, videos begin to play back immediately after you make the payment.
Now the big question is what’s in store for Indian Content providers? Will Youtube look forward to similar talks with Indian content providers too? In India, Bigflix has already tied up with Hulu to offer Bollywood movies and hit Indian TV soaps on an International level. In our earlier posts, we have told you how in future video production houses in India will gradually move to online content delivery to cut costs.
Youtube is the online streaming partner of IPL 3 and the movie – 3 Idiots which has created a huge wave among the audience is also available on Youtube legally! What’s more? Youtube is already the seventh most visited website in India… so there is an even chance of Youtube approaching Indian content providers to bring Indian movies to it’s rental service. Although we cannot predict who all will Youtube approach in India, but the probable players seem to be Production Houses, Bigflix and may be MoserBaer.
