‘My Name Is Khan’ Music Available Online, First Look At Subs.to – Subtitles Under One Roof

The time has come where Bollywood film makers have finally realized that music stores are more or less only for the elite sophisticated minority to buy new music releases. Indians known for it’s downloading abilities from the internet have got some strange news here. Karan Johar has made his new movie My Name is Khan‘s music legally available on iTunes across the world. This will be for the very first time a forthcoming movie in India will release its music online before the official (physical) launch in music stores.

Streaming and downloads made accessible for all via iTunes, makes the entire music industry in India finally appear puny amidst other internet options. Sony Music has taken this initiative for music to make the first cut online. Whereas on the other hand, various music recording companies like T-Series and Saregama have started selling music on memory cards and pen drives for today’s extra tech-savvy audience.

We recently reported something similar about the latest movie creating a buzz all around, 3 Idiots. They launched the movie for online video sharing via YouTube. This certainly made some news around the corner, that how much a movie maker has to safeguard his film being available online still making revenues.

Talking about latest releases, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani and Blue which were some of the big banner releases this month, were showcased on Colors Channel. They had the first-satellite screening rights of this year’s big-budget money-spinners. The channel is learnt to have paid a whopping Rs 4.5 crores for it.

Subs.to – First Look!

While movies are making a clean sweep across the internet, there’s a portal which can really promote international films in various countries. Not very innovative or like a new invention, but subtitles are here to stay. Everytime you had to Google the films name and go to different sites for subtitles in any particular language, it was much too of a hassle. Subs.to encompasses all the languages in a simple drop down list next to a search field where one can enter a movie’s name.

For most media players all you need to do is place the subtitle file in the same folder as the actual movie file—i.e. movie123.avi and movie123.srt—and the player will use the file without any interaction from you. A quick Google query of “yourmediaplayer subtitles” should clear up any issues you run into. The proliferation of online media has made is really easy to track down new and interesting things to watch that aren’t always in your native language.

We also studied in our anatomy of Indian online usage, how the market was actually shaped up. An online startup in India can become a huge success if it overlaps all 3 segments, affecting people’s lives, has the potential to go to mainstream and offer something for free which people are looking for and of course if the founders are prepared to realize that their company won’t make 100 million dollar revenue after 5 years!
