Yesterday we told you how GMail’s servers were almost hacked as Google discovered an attack originating from China which got through its security measures and compromised some intellectual property. Google also expressed their unwillingness to continue censoring results on Google China Search. Today, Google went one step ahead and has taken a step that might well affect GMail users all over the World.
According to a blog post, from now on GMail will switch you over to the secure version of itself automatically once you login. They also have said that this has been rolled on to almost all GMail accounts all over the world. So from now on whenever you log into GMail, you might start seeing https://www.gmail instead of http. (HTTPS stands for HTTP Secure, a protocol that helps protect data from being snooped by third parties, such as in public wifi hotspots)
How will you be affected by this change?
As https involves encryption and decryption of data, so using the https version of any web service may slow down the service since encrypted data doesn’t travel across the web as quickly as unencrypted data. But according to Google, they have been conducting tests and say that https won’t slow things down (GMail in this case) and is the right thing to do.
Note: Although Google says they have rolled out default https on GMail accounts all over the world, I still see the http version on GMail when I log into my inbox!

I`m getting a 400 bad something. Is this being caused by the Chinese hackers. I have upgraded to explorer 8 which is`nt what I wanted to do I despise explorer almost as much as I `m beginning to despise gmail.
lease hael me to fix this issure as i get a .ot of my business on gmail and noe its fucked up. It`s costing me money
You still see the http version of GMail because you might have opted to. Check your settings. In General tab, check the Browser Connection option. Google has made https the default, but you still have the option of using http.
Right Anuvrat!
Well, I have been using https from the day1. I am pretty much ok with the speed.
I prefer everyone to use HTTPS always.. I seriously don’t mind 1 or 2 sec delay.. Am nt trading stocks or anything.. After all its my mails.. So 1 or 2 secs delay never cause me any pain..
