Nexus One.. The SuperPhone arrives!
January 5 Twenty10 will perhaps be remembered as the day the SmartPhone evolved into what Google themselves are calling the SuperPhone!! Designed by HTC, dictated by and branded by Google, Nexus One has arrived.
Ever since photos of the device were leaked via Twitter, the hitherto super secret Google phone has been creating a buzz in the tech world. The announcement was made at Google’s California headquarters in an event called ‘Android Press Gathering’. The phone will be sold through a new web-store at $529 launched specifically for this purpose.
Clearly Google has entered the Phone market to stay..
Hardware

While it does look a lot like the iPhone, it is slimmer and lighter. It also has a removable battery unlike its Apple-made rival, and a 4GB memory card (exp to 32GB).
A humongous 3.7 inch 480 x 800 OLED capacitive touchscreen is base lined by 4 buttons (back, menu, home and search). It also has a navigation trackball device that doubles as a notification light by changing colours.
Throw in a 5MP camera with an LED flash and more importantly a snapdragon 1Ghz core processor and you have a device that is a dream!

Software
..and just when you think it cant get any better, well it does! Powered by the new Android 2.1 (Eclair) it has Google Voice deeply embedded into it. Facebook and Twitter too.
It adds support for Live wallpapers.
Has turn by turn GPS navigation on Google Maps.
3D scrolling of Apps and CoolIris to view photos in a totally new way.
With Settings backup, an entire profile can be backed up on a cloud and restored with ease.

But perhaps the most useful feature of this phone is the integration of Voice support for all text entry. A very handy feature for people who use mobiles on the go (that just about covers everyone). This application is housed on Google servers so it may not come to one’s rescue if they are out range.

The only downside here is that the gorgeous screen tends to eat up a lot the battery. Oh! and for all of us here in India there is a huge problem. It isn’t available yet! Google, for now, will ship it out to customers only in US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Ever since the launch of the iPhone, several phones have been launched to compete with it. With the NexusOne, Google may have raised the bar for the iPhone itself! I cant wait to get my hands on it. Though one must point out that the Nexus One isn’t launched for India yet and no announcement has been made for any future launch outside of the US market yet. But what are friends back in the US for huh?

And for reviews by people who have actually used this device. You can go here or here.

I like Nexus One
You missed the whole point dude!!
The main point of the whole press conference was that this phone will break the whole vicious cycle of fone bundled with carriers. As of now it is bundled with only one carrier but soon you will have the choice of getting nexus – at&t or nexus t-mobile and such different combinations.
The fone market in US is entirely different ballgame as compared to India.
yup yup. Im aware how different the market in the states is.
It was always known that Nexus One will be an unlocked GSM phone. There were no surprises there. It is already available with Tmobile. Verizon will follow suite soon too. AT&T though might just stay away until their exclusivity deal with Apple runs out. It will be interesting to see where things go from here.
I am sure I will buy one when in the US for Adtech
you missed another important point “Designed by HTC, dictated by and branded by Google, Nexus One has arrived.”
This is actually a HTC Branded phone. Not a Google branded one as rumored.
Thx
and yeah… its sold by Google!
@annkur : the back of the phone bears both Google and htc logos. I guess that makes it co-branded?
Strangely enough..All the stories Im seeing about the htc brand have been filed in the last few hours.
sold by Google indeed. I did mention the web-store.
Your review is just replica of Techcrunch and other posts. You have even image from Techcruch (did you credit that). Write some original stuff.
@Girissh : The day I have my own nexus one you will see an “original review” and an “original photo”. For now I cant say more than the people who were actually at the press event.
