The new year has dawn, and mobile applications have certainly found a way that will help their insertion in the Indian market. Mobile app developer Mobile 4 Mumbai have introduced their new service that will garner to their core focus area, serving a Mumbaikar via mobile. This time in news they are looking forward to launch the service to facilitate BEST bus commuters.

They claim that one of their software engineers found a person struggling to get information about a particular bus and it’s destination. And since not everyone has a bus detail booklet, he thought of devising this piece of information on people’s mobile phones. Today almost each person is assumed to have a mobile phone, but not all have GPRS or mobile internet on it. Besides, not all phones have those fancy features in-built which we see everyday.
At WATBlog we have spoken to eBay India’s Marketing Director Kashyap Vadapalli, who told us about ebay’s entrance in the Indian mobile market soon in 2010. Also many other mobile VAS players have generalised features so that not only an i-phone user, but also a common farmer can benefit from their services. For instance, Handygo and Reuters Market Light have initiated their information based services via mobile for farmers, while many others are believed to follow.

Here Mobile 4 Mumbai will allow people contribute to this service by providing information about bus routes and their destinations. A person who thinks he has a lot of information about various bus routes can “Contribute and Get Famous.” They promise to put the top 3 contributors can see their name on these downloaded applications available on the website.
How far before the entire Mobile app and VAS industry becomes a people-driven business? Mobile4Mumbai have certainly taken some load off their back by coming up with this solution. But on a long run, is this initiative going to help them achieve what they have been looking to do, a better tech-savvy Mumbai? What’s your take on this?

BEST already has a web site which not only gives you information on Bus routes, but also lets you put a “from” and “to” and gives out which bus routes to take, including the need to change routes if no direct service is available !
It does…. but u’ll need internet on the phone to look it up, won’t u?
